Danville Community College, in cooperation with Patrick Henry Community College, administers a TRIO program grant, Southern Piedmont Educational Opportunity Center (EOC), from the U.S. Department of Education. The TRIO EOC provides academic and financial aid information and assistance to citizens in the counties of Franklin, Halifax, Henry, Patrick, and Pittsylvania; and the cities of Danville and Martinsville. This full time, grant-funded position reports to the EOC Project Director. There is one year remaining on the current grant, which is renewable.
The Education Specialist is responsible for college access services to new and stop-out clients seeking to enroll or re-enroll in any 2-year or 4-year college/university. The Education Specialist will serve clients in Henry County, Patrick County, Franklin County, the city of Martinsville with occasional travel to other service locations in the target area.
Recruiting new clients and conducting initial client interviews
Assisting clients in completing admissions and financial aid applications to post-secondary institutions
Disseminating information on post-secondary educational and scholarship opportunities
Providing academic counseling and career guidance
Conducting educational workshops
Recording all services with supporting documentation
Conducting intensive follow-up of clients
Other responsibilities are as assigned.
Bachelorâ™s degree in counseling, human services, business, or related field is required
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Knowledge of career guidance and educational opportunities
Knowledge of the federal financial aid process and the college admission process
Understanding of the educational and economic needs of disadvantaged and first generation students
Proficiency in Microsoft Office computer applications
Data entry proficiency
Ability to work independently
Experience in managing multiple projects and meeting deadlines effectively
Ability to collaborate in a team environment
