The Kulkarni Lab is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to work on spatiotemporal heterogeneity of lung injury. The lab focuses on addressing how innate immune proteins can be harnessed to modulate the severity of lung injury occurring in the setting of infectious (e.g. pneumonia) and sterile (e.g. ischemia-reperfusion injury) etiologies. For further details, please visit the lab website at sites.wustl.edu/kulkarnilab/.
The project for the advertised position involves working in a multidisciplinary setting with basic scientists and physicians to investigate the spatiotemporal changes associated with lung transplantation in both human specimens and experimental animal models utilizing multiplex imaging and spatial transcriptomics, and in vitro model systems utilizing live cell imaging.
The postdoctoral researcher will have the opportunity to collaborate with the Thoracic Immunobiology Laboratory in the Department of Surgery, where experimental models of lung transplantation are performed. In addition to high-quality research facilities, career and professional development training for postdoctoral researchers is provided through the Career Center, Teaching Center, Office of Postdoctoral Affairs, and campus groups. Participation in weekly seminars in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care, and the Department of Pathology and Immunology are encouraged. Formal training opportunities are available through the Institute for Informatics (informatics.wustl.edu/) and the Clinical Research Training Center (crtc.wustl.edu/).
Trains under the supervision of a faculty mentor, including (but not limited to):
Manages their own project, which should lead to a first author publication.
Develops expertise in live cell imaging and assessing spatial heterogeneity of lung tissue involvement using histological sections and non-invasive imaging of animal models and human specimens.
Develops proficiency in career skills, including writing, public speaking, networking, and critical evaluation of scientific literature.
Presents scientific work both inside and outside the University with excellent oral communication skills.
Assists with grant preparation and reporting.
