The Stamps School of Art & Design invites applications for a Lecturer I position for the Fall 2021 semester (August 30 – December 31, 2021) to teach the following discussion sections:
ARTDES 150 - Art and Design in Context: Discussion Sections Days/Times: Sec. 007 - Tuesdays, 4:30p-5:30p* | Modality - In-Person Sec. 011 - Thursdays, 7:00p-8:00p* | Modality - In-Person
*In addition to assigned discussion sections, faculty are required to attend the Lecture portion of the course - Tuesdays & Thursdays, 11:30a-12:30p. Modality (lecture portion only): Online (asynchronous) - and attend weekly team meetings.
Art & Design in Context explores theory and criticism relevant for today's makers. The course explores texts and ideas from around the world, both long ago and more recently, that are foundational to how artists and designers conceptualize their work. Asynchronous lectures introduce the topics and theories; frequent low-stakes writings create space for students to work through those concepts; and weekly discussion sections deep dive into case studies through small- and large-group engagement. Through this course, students will gain a broad understanding of major themes and ideas in theory and criticism, learn to critique those approaches, and apply them to their own making.
Classes begin Tuesday, August 31, 2021.
The employment fraction for this position is .25 FTE.
Master's degree, preferably with a background in writing about art/design.
Minimum 1 year college-level teaching experience.
Ability to teach and facilitate discussions of texts and theoretical concepts; ability to use extant grading rubrics to assess brief writings; ability to work within a team with shared lesson plans and grading standards.
Record of active creative work, scholarship, research and/or industry or other relevant professional engagement.
Ability to assess student work in a timely and effective manner.
This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
