Dept Marketing Statement Under the direction the Custodial Services Manager and in collaboration with colleagues within the Department and across the campus, the Custodial Services Principal Supervisor is responsible for the leadership, management, and supervisory oversight for an assigned operational sub-unit of the Custodial Services Unit, a major operational services group within Physical Plant Services. The Unit provides custodial and related services for the residential, administrative, and academic areas of the campus as well as providing support for the annual summer conferences and commencement ceremonies. The incumbent is directly responsible for the assigned sub-unit and the custodial services it provides.
As such, the Custodial Services Principal Supervisor demonstrates solid subject matter expertise, exercises judgement and determines appropriate actions within defined procedures and policies while planning, managing, and supervising all activities and operations of the unit and its staff. This includes directly overseeing and coordinating all unit operations, hiring, training and developing, scheduling, supervising, managing, and evaluating staff; managing and ensuring maintenance and appropriate distribution of custodial equipment; implementing safety training and programs; overseeing and managing custodial supply inventories, implementing custodial service plans including determination of resource assignment and schedules, responding to customer service requests, analyzing and resolving problems which require the interpretation and application of policy, and assisting with the development of standard procedures and ensuring adherence to such. As a member of the Custodial Services Unit leadership team, the Custodial Services Principal Supervisor assists the Custodial Services Manager in the development and management of the operating budget, development of custodial care plans and standards, development of procedures as well as staff and customer handbooks or guides, and development of quality control, assurance and inspection programs. The Custodial Services Principal Supervisor also works with the Custodial Services Manager and peers within the Custodial Services Unit to maintain supplies, materials and equipment; test and evaluate new cleaning supplies and equipment; develop and implement a custodial equipment evaluation and replacement plan; and administer assigned unlocking and locking of campus buildings and facilities. Assignments are received from the Custodial Services Manager in the form of objectives with goals and the process by which to meet goals.
Physical Planning, Development & Operations (PPDO) manages and oversees all University activities and services related to physical and environmental planning, design and construction, engineering, physical plant maintenance and operations, capital planning and space management, and the associated business services necessary to support these functions. The University's main campus is spread across more than 2,000 acres and includes over 500 buildings comprising more than 8 million square feet. The department includes operating budgets of over $48 million, manages a capital project portfolio of approximately $500 million, and employs nearly 300 full time staff to carry forth the duties necessary for the campus' development and operation.
Custodial Services, a major operational sub-unit of Physical Plant Services which is part of Physical Planning, Development & Operations (PPDO) provides custodial services for the main campus as well as some offsite locations such as the Coastal Sciences Campus and University property at 2300 Delaware Street in Santa Cruz.
The services provided range from basic custodial care (cleaning of restrooms, classrooms, common areas, some office tasks, etc.,), to enhanced or specialized services such as in our Health Center, as required to support summer conference or special events including commencement, and emergency response to leak cleanup and/or minor health hazards. Currently, the Custodial Services unit is comprised of a day and night shift with the day shift primarily focused on residential areas and some non-residential locations such as the Library while the night shift focuses mainly on the academic, research, classroom, and administrative buildings. The University's main campus is spread across more than 2,000 acres and includes over 500 buildings comprising more than 8 million square feet. Custodial Services employs approximately 142 full time permanent staff and up to an additional 20 part-time seasonal or contract staff and an annual operating budget of over $12.5 million.

Job Duties 15%: Oversees daily work activities of assigned facilities and the group of Senior Custodial Supervisors and Senior Custodians who provide Custodial Services to such. This includes planning, organizing, directing and overseeing routine custodial operations performed. Assists in the development of custodial programs, plans and activities to assess, improve and ensure facility cleanliness.
15%: Inspects or assigns inspection of work performance for custodial staff to ensure conformance to custodial quality standards and the need of the building and our customers. Provides direction to subordinate supervisors to ensure services are focused, timely, and cost efficient.
15%: Responsible for personnel performance management including active management of performance issues using a progressive approach and consulting with the Custodial Services Manager. Write performance appraisals and set staff goals ensuring alignment with goals and priorities of the Custodial Services Unit and PPDO.
10%: Responsible for ensuring weekly time cards are completed and approved, which includes FAMIS and CruzPay entries. Responsible to ensure work orders through the FAMIS maintenance management system are prioritized, qued and completed in a timely manner.
10%: Participates in developing and monitoring operational and budget processes, and staffing levels. Supports the annual recharge and CHES projection reporting. Maintains scheduling within prescribed budgetary guidelines.
5%: Oversees operational, equipment and safety training and supervision of custodial staff to maintain an orderly, safe, and efficient cleaning operation. Requires knowledge in the care and use of power equipment.
5%: Enforces safety procedures, safeguards hazardous materials and ensures adherence to custodial policies and procedures. Assists in the development and implementation of staff training associated with such.
5%: Directly responsible for staffing, and the preparation required to support the routine academic year activities and the summer conference program. Supervises directly or indirectly all temporary employees, including for summer conferences, weekend custodial and general operating needs for coverage.
5%: Ensures proper implementation of the waste management program including management of biohazardous materials clean room policies and procedures, and the proper handling and mixture of chemicals.
5%: Ensures implementation of procedures as related to supplies and equipment inventory, control, checkout, and use. Maintains proper inventory needs and purchases inventory.
5%: Oversees building unlock and lock up schedules and security of assigned buildings. Assists with development and modification of the schedule where necessary.
5%: Conducts quarterly staff meetings, monthly safety tailgate meetings, and special meetings.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent certification preferred.
Solid knowledge in custodial and housekeeping services including industry standard cleaning practices and approach to such work.
Solid verbal and written communication skills in the English language with the ability to convey information clearly to a diverse range of people. To include active listening skills and ability to be flexible in communication style.
