Reporting to the Program Director of Occupational Therapy, the Assistant Director provides discipline-specific expertise and is actively engaged in an array of department initiatives. The Assistant Director supports university, school, and department goals; faculty and student success; a rigorous, research-oriented curriculum; and compliance with accreditation and licensure; and raising the visibility of the program and the school.
The Assistant Director provides professional and academic leadership and supports the Program Director in day-to-day operations. Serving as educator and mentor, the Assistant Director creates an educational environment which fosters innovation, responsiveness, and accountability; actively and substantively participates in assessment of student learning to meet prescribed outcomes; and vigorously upholds a culture of professionalism and academic integrity.
Provide professional and academic leadership and supports the Program Director in day-to-day operations
Fulfill assigned teaching load and facilitates student learning in accordance with prescribed course and program learning outcomes
Contribute substantively to course, curriculum, and program assessment activities via a continuous improvement plan set forth by the university
Regularly contribute to improvement or upgrading of class materials and syllabi
Follow established protocols for providing timely feedback, academic advising, and assessment of student learning
Attend professional development activities each year as agreed upon with supervisor in accordance with development plan
Select and participate in a minimum of one of the following activity areas: publishing & writing; contributing to textbooks; presenting at conferences or educational trainings; attending test-writing or accreditation activities; serving on thesis dissertation committees; or participating in another agreed upon professional activity OR
Identify and apply specialized research or activities related to teaching, assigned teaching area(s), or the scholarly community/knowledge of the discipline
PROFESSIONAL GROWTH AND SERVICE:
Attend department, school, and university meetings/councils
Demonstrate ongoing service in at least one of the following areas:
Community or public service
Profession (e.g., member of professional organization)
University/Occupational Therapy program
Demonstrate an active leadership role in the university and in the community or profession
Other duties as assigned
Experience & Educational Background:
PhD, EdD or doctoral degree in occupational therapy from an accredited university preferred
Minimum 8 years of documented experience, 5 in the field of occupational therapy (including clinical practice) and 3 in higher education, with child and adolescence teaching experience preferred
Initial certification as occupational therapist, registered with the NBCOT, Inc.
Licensed or eligible for licensure in the State of New York;
Expertise in areas such as adult neurological diseases, mental health, or research is preferred
Documented experience or certification(s) in area(s) of specialization (neuro-rehabilitation, or mental health, or orthopedic/hand rehabilitation, or pediatrics) required
Membership with the American Occupational Therapy Association required
Documented higher education administrative experience, including but not limited to, program planning and implementation, assessment/continuous improvement, personnel management, shared governance, and budgeting
Distinguished record of clinical accomplishment, contributions to practice/treatment, grant development, and some publication
Excellence in teaching and graduate student mentorship; and
Exceptional writing and presentation skills
Skills & Competencies:
Knowledge of state, federal and local laws/regulations relating to programs, governmental compliance and other regulatory standards
Ability to demonstrate clinical competency
Ability to maintain academic standards
Ability to work independently with general supervision
Ability to demonstrate a thorough, accurate and practical knowledge of their field or discipline
Ability to interpret and evaluate the theories of their field or discipline
Ability to effectively operate related equipment and machines for instructional purposes
Ability to manage and work effectively in a highly ethnic and culturally diverse student and associate community
Ability to use effective communication skills, both oral and written, including presentations and effective listening skills
Ability to use creative facilitation and conflict resolution skills to resolve difficult and sensitive issues
