This position is in support of faculty working in Pre- and/or Post-harvest food safety, with emphasis on elucidating mechanisms associated with pathogens and their relationship to gut health in heavy broilers and laying hens. A significant component of the position will include management of a BSL-2 live bird challenge facility/laboratory.
The Poultry Science Department currently houses approximately 70 undergraduate students, 17 graduate students, and 11 faculty. The Department conducts teaching, research and Extension activities on the 55 acre Poultry Research Unit on the MSU South Farm, which includes facilities for research with ~5,000 broilers, ~24,000 eggs/embryos, and ~3,000 layers. In addition, two tunnel research houses nearby house ~40,000 broilers. Proximity to and a strong working relationship with commercial poultry operations in the Southeast will increase research and extension opportunities for the successful candidate. The Department has recently renovated the industry-relevant processing plant, with assistance from an industry advisory board that has met quarterly for the past two years. In addition, we are happy to announce that our faculty and staff have recently relocated to a new facility, which houses state-of-the-art research labs and classrooms. The Department offers Bachelors of Science degrees with concentrations in Applied Poultry Management and Science and Pre-Vet Science. Both M.S. and Ph.D. degrees are offered from within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences in Poultry Science.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Duties will include, but are not limited to, the following: * Overseeing and maintaining BSL-2 labs in Hill Poultry Science and the BSL-2 Building at the Poultry Research Center (PRC) o Assisting with organization of undergraduate and graduate student research projects, protocols, and proposals o Scheduling student workers and overseeing time sheets o Ordering materials and maintaining equipment o Coordinating with the Poultry Operations Coordinator to schedule assistance from farm crew, as needed, assisting with sample collection, conducting laboratory analyses, and organizing data sets for statistical analysis o Running statistical analyses and assisting graduate students with statistics o Assisting graduate students with preparation of abstracts, slides, and posters for presentations at conferences * Animal care, husbandry, cleaning, feeding, health inspections, record-keeping. * Staying current with project-related scientific literatur * Identifying and implementing creative solutions to overcome problems * Professional development - to include independent research projects, grant proposals, abstracts and journal manuscripts, participation in scientific meetings, and interaction with the MS poultry industry as required.
Bachelor's degree in related discipline.
Rank and salary will be commensurate with the education and/or experience of the candidate.
MS in poultry science, animal science, biochemistry, microbiology, or related field
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge in microbiology, physiology, food safety and hands on experience with avian species. The position requires a high level of organization, ability to work well in a group environment, ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, ability to prepare written material and analyze data for reports, familiarity with computer-based programs (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, statistical programs)
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Animal care laboratory working with avian species. The work may include days, weekends, evenings or holidays as needed; and may require travel to other institutions, companies, and/or universities.
