Applying skills as a seasoned, experienced academic adviser, the lead advisor for the Division of Social Sciences will take a division wide leadership role, supporting advisors and advising within the division to improve advising processes, hiring, training and ultimately student success. This role will include improving practices in each of these areas through shared practices and materials as well as direct advising with students in departments during temporary vacancies. These activities will also be supported through process and data analysis in partnership with the divisional Curriculum Analyst. In addition, the lead adviser for the Division of Social Sciences will serve on the UC Santa Cruz Advising Council, representing the division and Social Sciences advisors while addressing campus wide advising challenges and initiatives. A central aspect of this work will be to serve as bridge between divisional advising and the Advising Council, creating a partnership for shared outcomes and success.
Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule Salary Information: $62,000- $67,000/hourly. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Working with divisional leadership and advising team, the incumbent represents the division on the Advising Council, communicating challenges and initiatives and making recommendations on behalf of advisors and programs in Social Sciences. Actively engages in Advising Council activities, which may include serving on or leading subcommittee efforts. Helps support the advising team and division by updating and maintaining divisional advising databases, supporting large lecture scheduling and supporting effective advising practices.
Coordinates with individual advisors and convenes regular meetings of the Social Science Advisors, sharing information essential to advising in the departments and escalating concerns to the division and possibly the Advising Council, when necessary. Represents advisers on divisional-level committees related to advising and student success, and meets with divisional leadership to adivise and update on campus and divisional advising issues as needed.
In collaboration with the department managers, ensures effective training and development of advisers in the division, including the development and maintenance of job documentation and on boarding materials. Coordinates and ensures effective cross-training and outreach / recruitment efforts. Coordinates and ensures effective cross-traning and outreach for division peer advisors and lead peer advisors.
Supports advising across departments by providing backup advising support when there are temporary vacancies.
In collaboration with the Divisional Curriculum Analyst, supports process and data analysis in support of student success, including but not limited to advising practices, scheduling, degree progress, retention and graduation and external reviews.
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Thorough knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
Knowledge of multiple majors, colleges, and schools.
Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving.
Abilities in problem identification, reasoning, ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
