We are seeking a Collection Counselor to join our Student Loan Collections team in Financial Operations. The Student Loan Collections area provides billing, collection and other student loan services in accordance with federal and university policies. This position is one of 5 team members responsible for the collection of student loan debt as well as outstanding student account balances through telephone, emails, letters, and personal contact.
Collect outstanding student loan and student account balances by telephoning appropriate parties and sending written communications via email, or letter.
Obtain missing information such as borrower addresses and telephone numbers by searching relevant university databases or by skip tracing.
Follow federal guidelines when placing borrower telephone calls, sending email communications, pre-acceleration letters, and/or acceleration letters.
Demonstrate discretion and judgment in interpretation of rules and regulations regarding federal loans and laws governing collection of student debt.
Counsel borrowers, and/or their representatives, of their rights and responsibilities on their student loans and other debt.
Determine deferment and cancellation eligibility and assist borrowers in obtaining these loan benefits.
Handle disputes concerning student loans or student debts in a professional manner while proactively seeking solutions.
Stay abreast of trends, regulations, and developments that may improve ability to perform job functions.
Completion of high school education, with college degree preferred
Two or more years’ experience collecting student debt, including knowledge of FERPA, the Fair Credit Reporting Act and the rules regarding Personal Identifiable Information
Proven customer service skills with a strong customer focus
Demonstrated ability to contribute to a positive work environment; ability to work independently and in a team setting
Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to effectively communicate with a variety of individuals from diverse backgrounds
Ability to maintain composure and professionalism during difficult conversations
Working knowledge of PCs and desktop software, preferably Microsoft Office Suite and Google Gmail
Knowledge of federal laws that apply to Student Loan collections
Experience with ECSI student loan servicing software
Experience with Student Accounting Systems (Oracle PeopleSoft helpful)
