Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Principal Laboratory Technician for the Office of Human Research Services at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey.
Under the direction of the Research Study Manager, the Principal Laboratory Technician assists in the acquisition, cryopreservation, processing, cataloging and shipping of tissues/body fluid and other biological specimens from area hospital operating rooms, patient sites, pathology laboratories and various patient encounter areas for the Office of Human Research Services (OHRS) and related laboratories. Must be able to work PM hours on a regular/permanent basis.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Daily, collects tissues/body fluids and other biological specimens from area hospital operating rooms, pathology laboratories, CINJ outpatient clinic, &other patient encounter areas to transport them to the CINJOHRS labs or other CINJ research laboratory. Spins/processes/freezes/does PBMC on biospecimens for short/long term storage. Trains junior staff in technical procedures.
Accurately documents biological specimen collection information onto specimen collection forms. Transcribes written specimen collection information into OHRS confidential database.
Maintains organized storage of specimens and specimen records in lab. Administers kit allocation from long to short term storage. Manages specimen distribution. The primary technician who checks for possible conflicts with same day shipment and blood collection schedules.
Ships and receives research specimens. Acts as the primary shipping technician being responsible for training new personnel and retraining those who need correction. Oversees staff that are IATA trained and observes that they uphold this certification.
Maintains de-identification of patient files and surgical reports compliant with HIPAA regulations. Primary tech to restock all cold storage with cold packs & reagents. Maintains freezers for organization & quality control procedures.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Associate's Degree in a relevant science plus two (2) years of related experience in a laboratory environment.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to read, write, speak and understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform job duties.
Successful collection and accurate processing of bio-specimens as per specifications of research protocol.
Communication with all levels of clinic staff is vital to effective collection of bio-specimens.
The ability to follow laboratory SOPs.
Understanding of the importance of the regulatory process in relation to specimens collected for specific clinical trials.
Ability to organize assigned laboratory work and develop effective work methods.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
Able to perform occasional overtime as needed.
