Research - Laboratory/Non-Laboratory, Staff/Administrative
Our Laboratory studies the role of the microbiota (gut microbiome) in infectious disease impacting shelter kittens, neonatal and young food animals, and dogs with chronic enteropathy. Moreover, our research has expanded into the pathogenesis of infectious diseases outside of the intestine but those which are influenced by the microbiota in the intestinal lumen. Our lab often collaborates with larger labs in the veterinary college and within Food Safety and Toxicology. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing and executing various benchtop molecular biology assays and analyzing and interpreting the data (along with Dr. Watson). Other duties include setup of laboratory equipment (including cell cultures), lab organization, reagent preparation, laboratory record keeping, maintaining and validating equipment, and training and supervising student employees. Importantly, the ideal candidate will be a motivated, enthusiastic, responsible, detail oriented individual with excellent communication and organizational skills.
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in the specific field of research employment or other related field; up to six months of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in basic research techniques in the specific or related field; word processing, spreadsheet; database and/or desktop publishing software; presentation software; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The job may require the appropriate pesticide applicator's registration/certification and/or experience working with potentially dangerous research animals.
