Provide professional development and writing academic support for the Master of Public Health Program. This includes providing individual assistance to students needing tutoring in writing courses and writing help to students working on theses and Applied Public Health Experience products. The Academic Support Specialist will take a leading role in the development and implementation of writing and professional development educational initiatives of the MPH Program, including mini-courses, and summer and extra-curricular enrichment activities. Other duties include assisting the Director with activities related to writing and professional development. Â Â
Provide tutoring and writing support to MPH students in need of help writing heavy courses (40%) Supporting Actions: Meet with students individually or in groups to assist with writing assignments. Meet with Professors to identify group needs and develop supporting materials that can be used in individual and group tutoring. Create and maintain a referral system for Professors to identify students that need academic support.
Provide writing assistance to MPH students working on their thesis or APHE (40%) Supporting Actions: Provide writing support and feedback for students on thesis proposals, thesis drafts, and APHE products.
Development and implementation of writing and professional development educational initiatives of the MPH Program, including mini courses ( How to cite in public health writing Â etc.), and summer and extra-curricular enrichment activities (e.g. writing and professional development sessions) (20%) Supporting Actions: Work with Director, Leadership Committee, and Curriculum committee to identify and implement educational initiatives. Coordinate instruction of and prepare materials for initiatives.
Dimensions This position will support 90+ new MPH students per year (180+ MPH students total).Â This position will work closely with 8-10 faculty teaching writing courses.
Job QualificationsÂ Education and Experience â¢Â Â Â Masterâ™s degree required in appropriate field, preferably an MPH â¢Â Â Â Experience with public health writing â¢Â Â Â Experience teaching or tutoringÂ Â Job Competencies â¢Â Â Â Comfortable tutoring students in writingÂ â¢Â Â Â Excellent verbal and written communication skills â¢Â Â Â Ability to provide constructive feedback on written products â¢Â Â Â Strong public health writing skills â¢Â Â Â Ability to manage multiple tasks, set priorities, and meet deadlines.
