The Medical Coder is responsible for the tracking, accessing, and review of all medical documentation of a patient's professional encounter. The focus on the review work is to abstract information from the documentation and translate into ICD-10-CM, CPT-4 and HCPCS coding systems using nationally recognized coding convention guidelines. The range of services includes those typically associated with an academic practice which is not limited to clinic visits, inpatient/facility-based services, surgical procedures, diagnostic services and telehealth encounter. Medical coders assist in education of billing providers, either independently or in a team setting surrounding documentation, reimbursement, and coding conventions. The Medical Coder will have frequent interactions with both medical and professional teams, including physicians, advanced level providers, therapists, Residents, medical/health students and others working within both clinical and revenue cycle operations.

Graduation from HS or equivalency plus: Medical coding training certificate or one year of demonstrated coding experience or completion of a two year Health Information Technology degree or an equivalent combination of related training and experience. Special Conditions for Continued Employment: Must have CPC (Certified Professional Coder) or CCSP (Certified Coding Specials- Physician) or applicable coding certification within two years of hire with the university in a position that requires coding certification, and maintain certification throughout employment with the university.
