The Department of Biochemistry at the University of Washington has contributed to many phases of research. The Institute for Protein Design (IPD) at the University of Washington in Seattle is creating a new world of synthetic proteins to address 21st-century challenges in medicine, energy, and technology. The IPD is a unique interdisciplinary environment where world-class researchers with expertise in computing and software, biochemistry, genome sciences, biological structure, pharmacology, immunology and other basic science disciplines, as well as clinical medicine, work together to both computationally design and experimentally characterize novel biomolecules. Current projects include the design of novel therapeutics for cancer, neurological diseases, and more, as well as new vaccines, nanomaterials, and enzymes.
The Institute for Protein Design has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer 1.
RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Main duties will include those described above, which will be carried out during normal working hours, periodically requiring overtime work to achieve key goals for the lab. 2. The Research Scientist 1 must be proficient with sterile laboratory maintenance and familiar with BSL2 requirements. 3. Will work closely with graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and research staff in support of research involving protein expression, purification, and biophysical characterization 4. Reporting on all protein production steps will be compiled into our DesignTracker database for coordination between cores and researchers. 4. The Research Scientist 1 will be responsible for ensuring proper reagent stocks and for anticipating & avoiding supply shortcomings. 5. Maintaining cell lines will require excellent sterile technique, coordination with researchers, and careful planning. 4. Ensuring that DNA is purified, verified, and ready for transfections. 6. Evaluation of transfected cells, removal of BSL-2 biohazardous material, purification of target proteins from cell culture via column chromatography, and verification of presence via SDS-PAGE & ELISA. 7. Tracking cryo-preverved cell lines and on-boarding new lines from collaborators and suppliers. 8. Performing assays to detect and identify contamination of cultures. 9. Familiarity with office productivity software (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) to prepare reports on the work performed.
REQUIREMENTS: •Bachelor's Degree in Biochemistry or related field + 3 months or more years of experience. •Organizational Scope and Impact of Position: •Responsible for reliable production of mammalian proteins as part of core operations for a large protein research wet lab. •Reliable production efforts and accurate reporting will enable core facility to efficiently produce target proteins for characterization and in vivo studies. Errors can impact multiple laboratories. •Previous experience with protein expression and purification.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
DESIRED EXPERIENCE •3 months-1 year of prior laboratory research experience. •Willing to learn about protein engineering and design. •Previous experience with biophysical methods for protein characterization using SDS-PAGE, native gel electropheresis, ELISA or others. •Previous experience working as part of a production team. •Previous experience working in a BSL-2 environment.
