Job Duties and Responsibilities
Seeking a detail oriented GIS Specialist to join the multi-faceted U-Spatial team. With offices on both the Twin Cities and Duluth campuses, U-Spatial collaborates with a variety of departments and centers, creating new opportunities and synergies around spatial research, teaching, and service as well as supporting projects with application development and spatial analysis. This position can be based in either Duluth or Twin Cities.
The GIS Specialist has the responsibility of designing and carrying out diverse research and mapping projects in consultation with academic staff and external clients in many capacities and disciplines. This includes technical GIS analysis, database management, spatial analysis, cartography, report writing, and communication with clients. They will acquire and interpret data using defined methods for analyzing data using scripting, model building, and database development and management. Some analyses may require Python scripting. The GIS Specialist will also develop and manage standard operating procedures (i.e. guidelines), templates, and workflows for ongoing projects and prepare presentations of projects or GIS methods to a variety of academic and non-academic audiences.
This position will primarily (75%) work on a project funded by the Minnesota Department of Health involving the mapping of lead service lines to residential locations throughout the state. There will be a team of 3-4 staff working on this project. Tasks for the GIS Specialist will include defining a data collection tool in collaboration with MDH, designing a spatial database, and helping develop a web-based map to allow for querying of the data.
Secondary responsibilities (25%) include working on a variety of projects and staffing the U-Spatial Help Desk as needed. Specific duties will be tailored to the applicant’s strengths, and will vary based on the stage of projects being worked on.
Successful applicants will be detail-oriented and organized, flexible, and self-aware. They should be able to communicate respectfully with co-workers and clients (i.e., students, faculty, staff and external collaborators). Requires independent, self-motivated work and problem solving.
BS/BA degree and two years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and work experience to equal six years
Experience with GIS and Esri products
Experience with Python scripting and notebooks
Skilled with spreadsheets and databases
Strong attention to details
BS/BA degree in GIS or related field
Experience with data collection using mobile devices and crowdsourcing technologies
Experience with remote sensing methods and analysis
Strong writing and communication skills with experience writing technical reports
