Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an Accounting Specialist for the office of University Controller. This position reports to an Accounting Manager in the University Controller's Office (UCO) and is responsible for the reconciliation of assigned University balance sheet accounts on a monthly basis, such as bank accounts and other asset and liability accounts. Performs professional work requiring knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), and a good understanding and application of concepts, theories, principles, practices, terminology, and applied bases of accounting. Communicates with faculty and staff in various functional departments across the University, and various external parties in a courteous and professional manner.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Prepares all reconciliations in a timely manner, consistent with the University and departmental established policies and deadlines.
Researches and resolves outstanding reconciling items and attempts to identify open items noted on the monthly reconciliation.
Takes appropriate actions, such as tracking reconciling items, notifying department and UCO management, and preparation of appropriate adjusting journal entries are performed on a timely basis.
Provides assistance on various projects, such as ongoing process improvement initiatives, year-end analytical reviews and reporting, assistance with internal/external audit requests as needed, and other general Accounting functions.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience that demonstrates knowledge and understanding of generally accepted accounting principles and practices.
A minimum of two (2) years' relevant experience in a financial/accounting function.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Computer literacy (MS Office – advanced Excel skills, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, ERP application experience, Oracle experience preferred but not required)
Strong knowledge of US GAAP/GASB
Ability to work independently with good analytical and problem-solving skills around accounting analytics and processes
Exceptional customer service skills
Three (3) years of related experience preferred.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
May be required to work extended hours during the fiscal year-end closing period and other peak periods throughout the year.
