Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Instructional Design Specialist for the Dean's Office within the School of Communication and Information ( SC&I ). Reporting to the Assistant Dean for Instructional Support and Assessment, the Instructional Design works to improve the design, development, implementation, and analysis of student-focused, outcomes-based curricula and instruction for online, on-campus, and hybrid/blended courses through pedagogical and technical approaches. With strong knowledge of the principles, theories, and concepts of pedagogy and andragogy and the use and delivery of instructional technology in complex environments for diverse audiences, the Instructional Design Specialist serves as a primary point of contact for faculty delivering technology-enhanced curricula and provides them with technical and pedagogical consultation and support.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Coordinates activities related to orientation and onboarding in-depth/comprehensive pedagogical and instructional technology support of new full and part time instructors;
Consults with faculty on approaches to learning and instruction and helping them to develop materials such as assignment instructions, rubrics, etc.
Provides models, templates, and frameworks that faculty can use to structure course related projects, assignments, and activities.
Collaboratively manages the design and development of curriculum and courses according to project timelines.
Assists faculty to identify and evaluate instructional software and delivery of training and coaching opportunities.
Works with the Assistant Dean for Instructional Support and Assessment on short- and long-term strategic planning for the integration of instructional approaches and technology.
Researches and analyzes current activities within the school and understands them within national trends of learning and instructional technology.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in instructional design, instructional technology, education, curriculum/instructional development, or a related field.
A minimum of five (5) years of related experience in higher education.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Extensive knowledge of learning theories, instructional theories, course design standards, practices, and their applications, and implementation of instructional technologies such as course management systems, rich digital content, collaboration tools, social media, student response systems, and presentation software.
Strong conceptual, planning, and project management skills.
Ability to develop and present instructional materials
Assess instructional technology and software programs
Effectively demonstrate instructional applications of technologies.
Effectively communicate technical information to a non-technical audience; and establish cooperative working relationships.
Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills and the ability to work with faculty and staff with diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
Master's degree in instructional design, instructional technology, education, curriculum/instructional development, or a related field.
Experience with the Quality Matters certification process including certification at the Peer Reviewer level (or higher), or equivalent knowledge and certification.
Course Management Systems – such as Canvas, Sakai; Web Conferencing – such as Big Blue Button (Canvas Conferences), Webex, Zoom; Lecture Capture/Screencasting – such as Kaltura, Panopto; Domain and Web Hosting Product and Services – such as Reclaim Hosting; and 1-touch video recording systems and their processes; Adobe Acrobat Professional and Reader; Microsoft Office software; Rutgers web-based systems such as schedule of classes, rosters, etc.; and Social media tools and their application to teaching/learning; Solid technical understanding of desktop computers and their operating systems; Knowledge of emerging technologies; and Knowledge of standard office equipment
