The University of Maryland's Thoracic Aortic Disease Research Lab is seeking a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow to join our interdisciplinary team of bioengineers, vascular biologists, and clinicians to conduct NIH-supported research in vascular biology, bioengineered models and tunable computational models of human thoracic aortic disease. Our laboratory within the Division of Cardiac Surgery in the School of Medicine and in direct collaboration with bioengineers within the A. James Clark School of Engineering is working toward the development of a tunable computational model based on multimodal imaging-derived indices with engineering, microarchitectural and vascular biological parameters that will be used to create a multi-parameter tool for predicting aortic disease progression and aortic catastrophes. The laboratory has established and maintains a large bank of human aortic specimens and a clinical imaging library to facilitate our interrogatories that span in vivo, in vitro and in silico investigations into the biologic and biomechanical processes underlying thoracic aortic diseases. The prospective candidate will have a PhD in bioengineering, or related field of study and a self-motivated interest in computational modeling and pursuing an independent research trajectory in cardiovascular bioengineering. The candidate should also exhibit excellent English written and oral communication skills and will be expected to publish in peer-reviewed journals, present results at scientific conferences, apply for external funding opportunities, and participate in the preparation of grant applications from the team.
As a part of the postdoctoral experience, the applicant can expect to receive career mentoring from faculty of various background (clinical and fundamental science) in developing a research program, writing research proposals, and to participate in career development activities. The successful candidate will be expected to work on projects that involve vascular biomechanics, fluid mechanics, mathematical modeling, wall tensile stress, wall shear stress, shape analyses and ECM material properties. Knowledge in the following areas is desirable: biomechanical testing, clinical imaging (echography, computed tomography), image post-processing, and computational modeling.
