Serves as Operations and Safety Coordinator for the departments of Microbiology & Molecular Genetics and Physiology housed within the Biomedical and Physical Sciences Building. This position provides support to both departments and serves as liaison with University safety and service departments to ensure both state and federal safety requirements are met and also serves as a member of the department(s) safety committee. This person:
Ensures that safety policies and procedures regarding students, faculty, and staff are communicated and up to date.
Coordinates building needs with IPF (Infrastructure Planning and Facilities) and provides internal maintenance to ensure proper infrastructure function.
Coordinates services and repairs of equipment with internal and external suppliers. This includes oversight of the autoclaves, water purification system, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, warm and cold rooms and serves as the liaison with clients, vendors, and University departments in order to provide any necessary repair or maintenance of these areas.
Coordinates needs for space to accommodate new employees.
Coordinates laboratory equipment and research supply disposal and clean-up of vacated laboratories and office space in preparation for new occupants and oversees department recycling.
Forecasts needs and orders supplies in order to maintain the operational function of the shared equipment and infrastructure.
Maintains and performs equipment inventory and tagging of these assets.
Oversee the MMG/PSL Facilities Center. The Facilities Center provides service to MMG and PSL Departments for shipping/receiving, management of BPS MMG/PSL keys and card reader access, research orders, etc.
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which would normally be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in a science related field; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work in a laboratory or environmental health setting, knowledge of state and federal safety standards, University health and safety standards, and University services; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must have a valid Driver’s License
Demonstrated skills of leadership and communication, well-developed sense of responsibility and initiative, and an understanding of basic scientific laboratories is desired.
and must have Certification in Biological Substance Shipping, Biosafety, Radioactive Safety, Bloodborne Pathogens, Chemical Hygiene, Laboratory Safety, Hazardous Materials Waste, Medical Waste, Laboratory Security, Non-Medical Sharps, Safe Handling of Hazardous Drugs, and Waterborne Pathogens.
