Under General supervision, this position will perform cytogenetic laboratory procedures leading to the formation of an accurate diagnostic report using the International System for Cytogenetic Nomenclature. The incumbent will use microscopy and imaging technology to evaluate human chromosomes and prepare karyotypes. The incumbent uses discretion and judgment in carrying out procedures. Responsibilities include:
Perform benchwork, analysis, and reporting of genetic assays with reliable accuracy and efficiency
Maintain lab areas and equipment including QC and validation documentation
Perform pre-director tech checking of straightforward cases and reports in areas of competency
Bachelor's Degree in related scientific field
Typically one year experience in a Cytogenetics lab OR completion of a formal certified training program in Cytogenetics
Certification as CG(ASCP)CM or MB(ASCP)CM or international equivalent
Basic knowledge of Cytogenetics of hematological disorders
Basic knowledge of related diagnostic testing and of the biology of hematopoietic disorders
Basic knowledge of CAP guidelines
Work with limited supervision with routine tasks

At Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, teams of world-renowned scientists and humanitarians work together to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer, HIV/AIDS and other diseases. Researchers are discovering new ways to detect cancers earlier, improve treatments, and learn how to prevent cancers from growing. Although Fred Hutchinson opened its doors in 1975, its history began about 20 years before that. In 1962 Fred Hutchinson envisioned a center devoted to studying cancer, a disease that took his brother’s life. Today Fred Hutchinson is contributing to the next waves of breakthrough treatments and prevention strategies. Fred Hutchinson collaborates with the Seattle Cancer Alliance, the National Cancer Institute, and the University of Washington.
