The Senior Associate Director of Student Financial Aid is responsible for assisting the Director in administering the financial aid programs. The key areas of focus are the day-to-day operation of the Office, the interpretation and implementation of Federal and State regulations, the maintenance of the Financial Aid Management System, and the determination of eligibility and awards of Federal, State and Institutional funds.
Provide direction and leadership for the day-to-day operation of the Financial Aid Office (FAO), with special emphasis on compliance with federal regulations, efficient use of technology, and customer service.
Ensure accurate, efficient, and timely delivery of student aid that is in compliance with federal, state and other relevant regulations.
Provide overall direction and analysis for FAO computer systems and programs; recommend enhancements to existing systems/programs or the purchase of new systems/modules in order to maximize the processing of financial aid.
Work with Director to develop overall awarding philosophy and strategy for institutional aid in order to ensure equitable and effective usage of funds.
Maintain expertise in all areas of financial aid so the Office can plan and react affectively to constantly changing Federal, State and Institutional policies.
Recommend and develop office policies and procedures and identify training needs for the staff as well as implement changes to policies and procedures as required by changing regulations. This includes ensuring that all staff have broad training in basic financial aid principles and philosophy and the ability to effectively speak to the general public and respond to questions in a satisfactory and accurate manner.
Update and maintain current office policy, procedure and processing manuals.
Work closely with the Director to coordinate and respond to financial aid audits and external program reviews.
Troubleshoot problems as they arise and recommend and carry out appropriate resolutions.
Responsible for financial aid file review. Verify and perform needs analysis on a third of the Office's caseload.
Manage federal financial aid programs, including, but not limited to: PELL Grants, SEOG and Federal Work Study. Oversee reconciliation, reporting to COD, and the R2T4 process to ensure timely calculations and return of funds.
Documented progressive professional experience (7-10 years) in a financial aid office.
Expert knowledge of general financial aid systems, policies and procedures and federal and state financial aid regulations.
Thorough working knowledge of Federal Methodology.
Ability to perform needs analysis under both Federal and Institutional Methodologies (familiarity with INAS a plus).
Ability to understand and interpret complex IRS tax forms.
Ability to understand and exercise professional judgement when reviewing student files as well as providing leadership in the use of professional judgement to staff.
Skill in resolving complex student financial aid issues as well as provide guidance to staff on resolving problem files.
A sophisticated understanding and demonstrated experience with data reporting/analytical skills.
Expert utilization of data and current industry technology (experience with PowerFAIDS a plus).
A proven record of developing relationships and building rapport with internal and external academic and administrative constituencies.
An unwavering commitment to delivering superior customer service.
The ability to promote an environment of continuous improvement within the dynamic teams of the Financial Aid and Admissions Offices.
