Civil Rights Investigator - Georgetown University's Office of Institutional Diversity, Equity & Affirmative Action

The Civil Rights Investigator will be responsible for conducting civil rights investigations at Georgetown University, in particular investigations of complaints of alleged discrimination and harassment based on protected characteristics. The Civil Rights Investigator also will be responsible for conducting climate assessments within the University and supporting the University's disability compliance obligations. The Civil Rights Investigator will report to the Associate Vice President for Equal Opportunity, Affirmative Action, and Compliance within the Office of Institutional Diversity, Equity, and Affirmative Action (IDEAA).
The Investigator will work closely with multiple University offices and divisions including the Office of Human Resources, the Georgetown University Police Department, and the Office of General Counsel. The Investigator will be expected to act as a neutral party in conducting prompt and thorough investigations of alleged incidents, and will provide a detailed, unbiased report regarding the findings of the investigation. Among other things, Investigator responsibilities will include:
Conducting or assisting in conducting investigations into allegations of discrimination, harassment, and hostile work environment based on protected categories, including age, race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, and national origin, in particular where complaints are filed against employees
Developing an investigative plan for each complaint
Contacting parties and providing them with information about the investigatory process
Interviewing the complainant, respondent, and potential witnesses
Gathering relevant documentation
Keeping detailed, consistent, and accurate records
Maintaining timely communication with parties
Drafting and issuing reports regarding the findings of the investigation
Implementing and keeping apprised of new developments and best practices in Title IX and Civil Rights investigation procedures
Conducting Climate Assessments of University departments
In addition, the Investigator will be responsible for the following:
Coordinating reasonable accommodations for employees
Creating and delivering trainings related to employment equity issues, the University's grievance procedures, and employee reporting obligations
Providing support for University compliance obligations related to employment equity
At least 3 years of professional experience, at least 2 which should include experience conducting civil rights investigations, preferably in the higher education arena
Substantial experience working with diverse populations, including populations of color, the LGBTQ community, and persons with disabilities
Beneficial experience will include:
Familiarity with higher education
Experience conducting sensitive and confidential investigations, including in the area of sexual misconduct
Demonstrated skill in party and witness interview and investigation techniques
Experience in, and awareness of, the sensitivity required when interacting with a diverse community
Ability to produce high quality written work
Demonstrated ability to exercise discretion and good judgment
Ability to maintain neutrality and establish credibility with broad range of constituents, including faculty, staff, students, law enforcement, and others
Strong and effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to listen well
Demonstrated sensitivity to and respect for individual needs
