Detailed Job Description The Digital Imaging and Remote Sensing (DIRS) laboratory in the Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science (CIS) at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) is looking for a highly motivated researcher to take on a post-doctoral fellowship under funding from the United States Forest Service (USFS) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) funding. Our project objectives are to i) refine current 3D light detection and ranging (LiDAR)-based algorithms to asses plot-level elevation errors in mangrove forests, ii) refine algorithms for plot-level forest structure assessment, iii) supervise a computer science student to develop operational code for terrestrial LiDAR-based elevation assessment, iv) continue research on unmanned aerial system (UAS)-based nutrient assessment in vineyards with an end-goal to identify ideal sensing mechanisms to monitor vineyard nutrient status. Objectives i-iii) is funded by the USFS and Objective iv) by the USDA, in a 50%-50% effort split.
The USFS project will focus on using terrestrial LiDAR (TLS) data, collected in 2017 and 2019 in Micronesia, to keep refining existing algorithms related to surface elevation mapping and change assessment, as well as the assessment of mangrove forest structure. These algorithms have been developed and published, but we now need to investigate plot-level elevation errors and extend structural algorithms to the forest canopy (branch and leaf structural parameters). The post-doc will also oversee the translation of the existing algorithms to operational code, for use by in-field personnel, supported by a computer or imaging science student.
The USDA project will focus on using UAS imaging spectroscopy data, collected over upstate NY vineyards, to evaluate our ability to assess, man, and monitor macro- and micro-nutrients using high spectral resolution data. The final objective is to distill those outcomes to identify operational sensing solutions, in terms of wavelengths, spatial resolution, sensing modality, platform, etc., for potential use by the larger vineyard grower community.
A successful candidate for this position already will have a PhD and possess advanced skills in physics-based remote sensing, the use of UAS-based imaging spectroscopy, a solid understanding of LiDAR sensing, experience in precision agriculture applications, and a strong coding skillset (e.g., Matlab, Python, C++, etc.). A strong interest in development of operational sensing solutions is a requirement.

Required Minimum Qualifications PhD in Imaging Science, Physics, Computer Vision, Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.
EXPERIENCE Position requires good analytical and writing skills
SPECIALIZED SKILLS Possess advanced skills in physics-based remote sensing, the use of UAS-based imaging spectroscopy, a solid understanding of LiDAR sensing, experience in precision agriculture applications, and a strong coding skillset (e.g., Matlab, Python, C++, etc.).
