The postdoctoral research associate position provides an opportunity to conduct research on low energy desalination and water purification in a multi-disciplinary project team consisting of partners from four top tier organizations. The work concerns the development of renewable energy powered desalination and water purification processes, and advanced materials for water treatment and solar energy harvesting. In addition, the person filling this position will collaborate with water utilities and industry partners in field demonstration of the technology.
We seek candidates who have demonstrated ability to lead and/or work collaboratively in teams comprised of individuals of diverse backgrounds, skills, and perspectives, and to integrate the knowledge, tools, and ways of thinking from engineering, mathematics, and computational and natural sciences to solve complex problems.
- Investigates the coupled heat and mass transfer processes in a thermally driven membrane desalination system - Develops high performance photothermal membrane materials - Studies the impact of environmental and operating conditions on the desalination efficiency - Publishes and presents research findings - Assists with proposal development to obtain research funding - Mentors, oversees, and/or trains junior research team members - Supports project management and collaboration across institutions or disciplines - Performs all other duties as assigned
- Engineering research laboratories at Rice University are fully furnished for modern engineering research - Receives annual safety trainings by the university, and will be supplied with personal protective equipment (PPE) - Shared office space - Occasionally work evenings and/or weekends due to the demands of the research activities - Expected to travel to conferences for continuing research education - Occasional trips to the field testing site
- Requires working at a computer for extended periods of time (up to eight hours per day) - Manual dexterity to perform experiments in a laboratory - Able to work in a laboratory environment and/or chemical wet lab for long periods of time (up to eight hours per day) - Able to work and walk in varied and most weather conditions and handle small field equipment and necessities
- Able to understand and comply with all lab safety protocols - Knowledge of material characterization techniques - Knowledge of water quality analysis techniques - Basic command of Matlab - Expertise in design, construction and operation of laboratory experimental systems - Advanced knowledge of mass and heat transfer processes - Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as oral presentation skills - Organization and time management skills - Knowledge of modern research methods, data collection and analyses - Knowledge of the principles and techniques of the subject discipline - Writes scholarly papers based on ongoing research and submits them to journals for publication - Able to work in a collaborative environment - Able to work independently and professionally with minimal supervision and direction
Experience Preferred: Research experience in membrane or thermal desalination processes, process modeling
Education Preferred: Membrane materials and processes, desalination, environmental nanotechnology
