The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory is a world-class fusion energy research laboratory managed by Princeton University for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. PPPL is dedicated to developing the scientific and technological knowledge base for fusion energy. The Laboratory advances the fields of fusion energy and plasma physics research to develop the scientific understanding and key innovations needed to realize fusion as an energy source for the world.
The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) seeks outstanding candidates for an Associate Research Physicist position (RM2) in its X-ray Spectroscopy Group. The successful candidate will play a leading role in designing, implementing, and conducting scientific research with high-resolution x-ray spectrometers on both High Energy Density (HED) and magnetized low-density fusion plasmas. PPPL is the leading national laboratory within the Department of Energy (DOE) specializing in plasma and fusion physics. The X-ray Group at PPPL has a successful history of designing advanced diagnostics and conducting novel research on many fusion facilities including: National Ignition Facility (NIF), W7-X, NSTX, EAST, Alcator C-Mod, TFTR, and PLT. Future x-ray diagnostic research is also planned on fusion facilities including WEST, JT-60SA, and ITER. The successful candidate will participate in the NIF collaboration with PPPL designing x-ray instrumentation and collaborating on Inertial Confinement Fusion research. There will also be involvement with x-ray instrumentation and research on future magnetized low density fusion facilities. There are also opportunities to develop collaborations in x-ray spectroscopy on HED plasmas at other national labs, universities, and on user facilities through the LasernetUS program. In addition, there are also opportunities to collaborate in Atomic Physics studies relevant to astrophysics and inertial and magnetic confinement fusion. Understanding and contributing to the validation of atomic physics codes is essential to the inference of plasma parameters from x-ray spectra.

Education and Experience:
Ph.D. in Plasma Physics or equivalent
Extensive experience in x-ray spectroscopy and atomic physics
Proven record of scientific publications
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to design x-ray crystal spectrometers for tokamak, stellarator, and laser produced plasma
Knowledge of collisional radiative codes for calculating x-ray spectra
Must be able to travel to plasma facilities to conduct x-ray spectroscopy experiments for extensive periods of time
