To lead and support a variety of routine and specialized Extension and research duties focused on a combination of fisheries science, fisheries management, community engagement, and data collection, interpretation, and reporting.
This position will be housed in the Coastal Research and Extension Center in Biloxi, MS.
Area of Specialization:
Coastal Gulf of Mexico fisheries, commercial and recreational fisheries Extension, fishery-independent sampling techniques, data analysis and statistical modeling
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The selected applicant will become part of the Marine Fisheries Ecology Program and will be involved with a variety of program activities. The primary activities for the selected applicant are outlined below but could include any activities associated with the Marine Fisheries Ecology Program. The primary responsibilities of the selected applicant will be to develop, implement, and evaluate fishery-independent monitoring programs, citizen science programs, and Extension courses throughout Mississippi and Alabama, but with a primary focus on the SE and coastal region of Mississippi. These duties will include activities such as, but not limited to:
The primary responsibilities of the selected applicant will be to lead and/or assist with the development, implementation, and evaluation of an applied science program. These duties will include activities such as, but not limited to: * Organizing meetings * Leading and assisting with trainings * Leading and assisting with the preparation and dissemination of outreach materials, Extension publications, and technical reports * Developing, organizing, and implementing field research * Trailering and operating vessels * Collecting, interpreting, and reporting data * Performing research activities, such as literature reviews and sample collection/processing * Organizing and implementing monitoring programs; managing project budgets; developing and maintaining community partnerships * Other duties as assigned
Education: Bachelor's Degree with major course work in a curriculum appropriate for the field of assignment.
* Master's degree with major course work in a curriculum appropriate for the field of assignment. * Extension, outreach, education, and project management experience * Familiarity with Gulf of Mexico fisheries, marine and fisheries ecology, and citizen science
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
* Typing and computer skills (word processing and spreadsheets) * Highly flexible: ability to adapt to a rapidly changing schedule * Ability to juggle multiple tasks and prioritize multiple demands * Strong oral and written communication skills * Knowledge and skills in using Microsoft Office Suites especially Word, Excel, PowerPoint; knowledge and skills in document/project management/sharing platforms (e.g. Google Drive, Basecamp, etc.) * Knowledge and skills in webinar software (WebEx, GoToMeeting, Zoom, etc.) * Ability to develop and maintain diverse and robust partnerships * Ability to collect, process, and interpret research data; ability to author or co-author publications.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
* Considerable physical activity. Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of job. * Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. * Ability to work in extreme weather conditions * Ability to work long hours * Requires substantial routine travel, including some overnight trips * Working remotely may be allowed for this position.
