The Graduate Career Advisor provides individualized and group career advising to Masters of Finance graduate business students at the UC San Diego Rady School of Management. The position guides and advises students in the selection of appropriate career goals via exploration of professional interests, skills, expertise, previous employment background, industry job prospects, and local and global employment opportunities.
The Graduate Career Advisor guides the job search from planning and self-assessment to individualized job search strategies and action plans. The position advises on job search activities from initial matriculation through job acceptance, offering information on OPT/CPT options for international students. The position tracks student progress by keeping meticulous records, documenting data regarding job search outcomes and while maintaining employment records in the 12Twenty data base.
The Graduate Career Advisor plans and delivers career development/job search programming and workshops focusing on resume writing, interview skills, job search strategies, and other presentations geared to career development and job/internship searches. The position also individually coaches graduate business students on writing cover letters and resumes, preparing for job interviews, and salary negotiation. This position coaches Masters of Finance graduate business students, many of whom are from China and a cultural awareness and ability to coach international students is required.
Although the majority of the responsibilities are student-focused, the Graduate Career Advisor also interacts with employers sharing the benefits of hiring Rady School graduate business students, plans and conducts employer visits/treks, and integrates/invites employer participation in student-focused campus workshops, panel discussions, and conversations.
Must be willing and able to travel locally (rare).
Workshops, special events, career fairs, graduation are occasionally held in the late afternoons or early evenings during the week (rarely on the weekends). Additionally, conversations with employers in China occasionally require off-hours phone calls due to time zone issues.
