Reporting to the Executive Director, the Senior Director/Director of Business Development - Life Sciences plays a key role in the office as a trusted advisor to the Executive Director, Brown Technology Innovations colleagues and faculty and staff around life science commercialization. Operationally, the Senior Director/Director focuses on serving two customers - the inventors who make Brown technology and the investors, companies and entrepreneurs who commercialize it. Â The Senior Director/Director has an enthusiasm for and aptitude in these three areas: Â i) technology evaluation; ii) intellectual property (IP) management and iii) sourcing and negotiating agreements.
This is a dual graded position posting. The candidate's qualifications/experience will determine if the position is filled at a grade 13 Director or grade 14 Executive Director level.
Thought leadership around life science commercialization
The Senior Director will devise and execute commercialization strategies based on the research projects and IP portfolio of their assigned faculty and inventors in combination with industry trends and practices to drive deal flow and revenue to the office. Â
Additionally, the Senior Director will act as a key representative for the office of Brownâ™s life science research to investors and companies at industry meetings and conferences.
Technology Evaluation and Intellectual Property Management
Soliciting and evaluating invention disclosures from Brown faculty members.
Identifying between IP protection and industry sponsored research pathways.
Aptitude for making prompt decisions on patent filings by utilizing patentability and market data.
Providing direction to outside counsel and inventors on patent decisions. The Senior Director/Director will be familiar with their portfolio of technologies and continually identify opportunities for commercialization of it. Will have accountability for an individual patent budget.
Sourcing, negotiating and execution of technology deals
The Senior Director/Director will leverage network of technology investors, business development groups and entrepreneurs to develop new leads for commercialization agreements.
The Senior Director/Director will reliably source IP licenses and options, industry sponsored research agreements, and master collaboration agreements around Brown technology. For these agreements, the Senior Director will be the point of contact to licensees and sponsors for negotiation and be able to interface with Brown staff to ensure agreement compliance with university policies prior to execution.
The Senior Director/Director of Business Development - Life Sciences should have a sales and business development oriented mind-set, and experience in commercializing early-stage technologies.Â Ideally, the ideal candidate should bring the following competencies, experiences and educational background:
Understand, synthesize and effectively communicate technology in both verbal and written formats.
The Senior Director must have an established track record of technology deals including intellectual property licenses, industry sponsored research agreements and collaborations.
Aptitude in patent prosecution; genuine interest in early stage technology development and markets.
Understanding of structure and facility in negotiating intellectual property licensing and industry sponsored research agreements including structure.
Education in relevant technical fields (science, engineering, etc.); advanced technical or business or law degree; 7 years of experience in business development, innovation management, technology commercialization, or equivalent; experience working in or with academic institutions a plus.
The Senior Director should have a sizeable network of technology investors, business development groups and entrepreneurs to access.
Work requires the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with diverse internal and external constituencies at all levels of the organization.
Demonstrated ability to work independently on detailed analysis of complex policies, problem solve and follow through on assignments with minimal direction.Â
Demonstrated ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.
