The Companion Animal Hospital (CAH) is seeking Animal Attendants to work with faculty clinicians, Licensed Veterinary Technicians (LVT's), Interns and Residents, as well as other staff throughout the hospital, providing optimal patient care for our clients/owners.
As an Animal Attendant, you will be responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of approximately 123 rooms in our Companion Animal Hospital, used to provide veterinary services to over 23,000 patients annually. Maintain hallways and other assigned floors, which include dust mopping and mopping daily, as well as stripping, waxing and polishing as needed, and as time allows. Clean and disinfect all areas throughout shift, which includes exam rooms between clients, trash removal, and removal and disposal of bio hazardous wastes. Will be required to clean up feces, urine, vomit, and other body fluids. Record the daily census of inpatients in INC/ICU and ward areas when assigned. Restock wards, treatment areas and workrooms with appropriate supplies.
In addition, and when time allows, under the supervision of a licensed veterinary technician (LVT), you will assist with a variety of duties associated with patient care and maintenance of the Nursing Care Units, as well as other services in the Companion Animal Hospital to assure quality care for pets, primarily cats/dogs, but will include other species. Responsibilities include assisting the veterinarians and LVT's with restraint of animals for medical procedures such as blood sampling, IV catheter placement; provide animals with a clean and comfortable environment, which includes cleaning and disinfecting cages and all other areas as assigned, as well as providing the animals with correct diets as ordered by clinician. Walk patients outside and collect urine/fecal samples as needed. Assist technician with answering phones in INC/ICU as needed. Strict adherence and enforcement of hospital infection control policies is required. Dependability is essential. Constant communication with veterinary technicians will be required to coordinate treatment and cleaning duties.
The Cornell University Hospital for Animals provides 24-hour care for pets 365 days of the year. The schedule for this position requires flexibility to insure that adequate patient care and service needs are provided without interruption or exception, and will include weekend, evening, overnight and holiday shifts.
What are the qualifications?
High School diploma and at least 6 months experience, including direct experience with companion animals handling in a veterinary facility using various holding techniques, and in housekeeping/custodial/disinfection tasks, or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
Candidate must have the ability to meet the physical demands of the position, which includes, but is not limited to, prolonged standing and kneeling, as well as lifting and restraining animals that may exceed 50lbs.
Must have general knowledge of basic infection control practices and the ability to adhere to and enforce those practices;
Must demonstrate a high level of initiative; have excellent communication and organizational skills and the ability to multi-task;
Must develop and maintain excellent working relationships including communicating with staff, students, technicians, veterinarians and clients in a professional manner at all times.
Due to the nature of the position, rabies pre-exposure vaccinations and titer required, and cost will be covered by department.
