The Leonard D. Schaeffer Center for Health Policy and Economics is one of the nationâs premier health policy research centers.Â Housed jointly in the School of Pharmacy and Price School of Public Policy at the University of Southern California (USC), its mission is to measurably improve value in health care through evidence-based policy solutions, research excellence, and private and public sector engagement.Â A communications team supports a sophisticated dissemination strategy to ensure Schaeffer Center research informs health policy.Â In addition to assisting in the publication of policy-relevant, peer-reviewed journals, the team produces white papers, issue briefs, opinion pieces, e-newsletters, and creative data visualizations and graphics.Â Center experts are frequently cited by the media, White House, Congress, the Congressional Budget Office, the Federal Reserve Board, and other agencies.
A diverse staff of 40+ work alongside 60+ fellows to ensure the Centerâs activities are rigorous, independent, and policy-relevant.Â This includes research staff (directors, administrators, and specialists), a finance team, and media and communications experts.Â The Center also supports a microsimulation group and a programmer core with access to models, methods, and an extensive data library.
The Schaeffer Center is seeking an executive level director to lead a major health policy undertaking, the Healthcare Markets Initiative.Â This initiative will bring together thought leaders to explore novel ways to redesign healthcare markets to deliver value and improve efficiency.Â Its approach will broadly include prevention, medical services, medications, devices, and health insurance. Â Successful candidates would have demonstrated excellence in managing the execution of multiple complex health policy undertakings simultaneously; worked extensively with advisory and steering committees, research partners, and thought leaders from government, the healthcare industry, and other stakeholders; demonstrated ability to organize and develop a strategic research agenda; execute and manage projects on a tight timeline; and provide measurable outcomes to document the success of the undertakingâs research agenda.
The position requires strong written and oral communication skills, experience managing externally funded grants and funders, ability to identify and cultivate funding sources, lead new and ongoing proposal development initiatives.
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in economics, health services research, health policy, or a related field.Â
The candidate must have an extensive project management background and possess exceptional interpersonal and communication (written and oral) skills.Â
This is a full-time management position that requires strong organizational skills, the ability to work independently and as part of a team, budgeting, estimating and scheduling skills and an orientation to details.Â The candidate must have experience supervising project staff.
Extensive track-record (ten plus years) of work on large scale projects.
Strong institutional knowledge of the healthcare industry and policy issues.
Demonstrated interest in and knowledge of health policy and economic research methods.
Ability to balance numerous projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines.
Proactive and results-oriented.
Superior presentation skills.
Experience in health policy and/or healthcare consulting is desirable.
Demonstrated record of accomplishment in grant solicitation is highly desired.
Competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Position is 100% FTE on a 2-year (renewable) fixed term.
