Purpose of Position
This position provides dynamic guidance and leadership to the Health & Fitness Lab in fitness services, group fitness, personal training, and instructional classes. Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Director of Health & Fitness, the Fitness Coordinator will have direct oversight of the day-to-day operations of the Fitness Center, including staffing and supervision, and maintenance of equipment.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are customary of this position but are not to be construed as all-inclusive. Duties may be added, deleted, and assigned based on management discretion and institutional needs.
Coordinate, conduct and promote a diverse and accessible schedule of group fitness classes and instructional programs for all populations, abilities, and fitness levels.
Assist with daily operations of the Health & Fitness Lab including maintaining a regular schedule for fitness services, including fitness assessments, exercise prescription, body composition assessments and individual consultations.
Directly supervise the fitness center operations and regularly communicate with the Assistant Director, Health & Fitness about maintenance issues, equipment needs, supplies, and any other relevant information.
Teach a minimum of one group fitness classes each week, and fill-in for instructors as needed.
Oversee the implementation of a preventative maintenance schedule for all fitness center, group fitness, personal training and Health and Fitness Lab equipment and facilities.
Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate Graduate Assistant(s) to assist with group fitness, personal training, fitness center, fitness services and instructional programs.
Actively recruit, hire, train, and evaluate the group fitness, personal trainers, fitness center attendants, equipment technicians, fitness service providers ("Lab Assistants") and instructional staff.
Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate practicum, internship students and employees to assist with group fitness, fitness programs/facilities and instructional programs.
Develop and manage all fitness staff (fitness center, lab assistants, group fitness instructors, and personal trainers) schedules, disciplinary issues, and payroll.
Coordinate and conduct fitness programs and events for WKU students.
Coordinate, develop and maintain promotional materials, website, and social media content for all services, programs and facilities offered by the department.
Assist Assistant Director with coordination of fitness center and program equipment purchases, installation, inventory and maintenance.
Act as a resource person for students, faculty, and staff for all relevant and up to date fitness and exercise materials and literature.
Coordinate and host professional fitness certifications and workshops (AFAA, YogaFit, ACE) throughout the year.
Independently seek out relevant professional development opportunities.
Initiate timely and necessary communication with the Assistant Director, Health & Fitness on any relevant issues.
Secondary Duties and Responsibilities
Assist staff in exercise services.
Conduct Health & Fitness presentations as requested.
Seek opportunities for collaboration with other campus departments and academics when possible.
Assist with the development of departmental risk management, marketing, membership, customer service, and staff development plans.
Perform other related duties as assigned by the Assistant Director, Health & Fitness.
Assist with necessary office duties as required.
Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science, Health Promotion, Wellness, or a related field.
One year of professional experience in recreation, athletics, or fitness/wellness programs in higher education.
Group fitness instructor or personal training certification from a nationally recognized fitness organization i.e., NASM, ACE, NCSF, NFPT, ISSA, AFAA, ACSM, NSCA with a minimum of 1-2 years of teaching and/or training experience.
1-2 years of direct supervisory and management duties
Experience conducting fitness assessments and providing fitness training services.
Excellent spoken and written business grammar.
Strong interpersonal, motivational, communication, and relational skills.
CPR/First Aid/AED Certifications or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
*Note: Serving as a Graduate, Teaching, or Research Assistant will be considered as 1-year professional experience.
Salary Grade: 107 Salary Range: $16.00 - $19.50 per hour
