The Director of General Education (GE) is a full-time faculty that teaches in and oversees the GEprogram for all undergraduate students. The Director is responsible for leadership, coordination, and implementation of the GEprogram, attendant initiatives, policies, and processes. For activities related to GE, the director reports to the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education and Community Engagement. For activities related to the candidate’s field of study, the director reports to the relevant chair and/or program director.
Leadership and Coordination
Directs all aspects of the General Education Council approved GE program.
Serves as Faculty Director of First Year Seminar.
Plans and oversees faculty development activities related to General Education.
Promotes the General Education program and its learning goals (e.g., incorporation into course syllabi, incorporation into new student orientation, and new faculty orientation).
Advises colleges/schools/departments and/or faculty members on developing General Education courses or recertifying courses for general education.
Directs program assessment efforts for the General Education program in coordination with departments.
Acts as a resource for colleges/schools/departments and faculty interested in developing courses or recertifying courses for general education.
Supports the articulation of general education courses for transfer agreements and articulation pathways with other higher education institutions.
Supervises Assistant Director of General Education.
Collaborates with Faculty Directors in the Writing Program, Writing Center, and Tutoring Center, Bridge Program, and Launch Program.
Collaborates with Staff Directors in Academic Success Center, Center for Global Learning and Engagement, Center for Academic Service Learning, Career Center, TRIO program, and Provost’s Communications Office.
Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Reviews, edits and approves all content about the General Education program for the university catalogs and webpages to ensure accuracy of information.
Resolves academic general petitions for General Education.
Develops and manages the General Education program’s operational budget.
Prepares reports as needed including year-end summary.
Maintains confidentiality and manages confidential information.
Committee and Meeting Responsibilities
Attends General Education Council (GEC) meetings as an ex officio (non-voting) member.
May attend Professional Studies Council (PSC) meetings as a voting member representing GEC.
Consults with General Education sub-committees to review and approve curriculum, and review and approve policies.
Serves on University-wide Task Force/Committees as requested by the Associate Provost to represent the General Education Program.
Represents the General Education program at campus and external events.
Meets periodically with the Associate Provost to facilitate improvement of the General Education program and to monitor program implementation activities.
Has served as a full-time faculty member in a general education discipline,and holdsa terminal degree.
Understands the theory and best practices of successful general education programs.
Experience in curriculum development and evaluation.
High level of organizational skills.
Ability to communicate with a wide variety of university personnel and students.
