The Support Services Specialist is responsible for managing the accounts receivable activities of the College of Dentistry's Orthodontic Clinics and coordinating the selection and assignment of patients to our Orthodontic Dental Residents/House Staff/graduate students. This individual will be located on-site, providing both in-person and phone support to patients, residents and faculty.
Manages incoming and outgoing patient calls to resolve patient's billing statement, explain treatment options, translate insurance benefits and answer financial questions.
Evenly matches and distributes patients to residents, considering the patient's Orthodontic needs. Coordinates final assignment to ensure residents and supervising faculty members have equal patient numbers assigned. This also includes re-assigning patients at the time of graduation to provide seamless continuation of patient care.
Responsible for various aspects of dental billing: claim creation, claim submission, payment posting for insurance, and patient balances oversight.
Serves as a resource for problem solving issues related to claims processing, registration, demographic, and insurance errors.
Works guarantor and program acceptance correspondences including support emails, and phone messages to and from both internal and external contacts.
Adheres to the HIPAA guidelines regarding confidentiality relating to the release of financial and medical/dental information.

College of Dentistry - Dental Patient Business Office (Iowa City, IA)
Salary: $39,208 to commensurate (Pay Grade: 3A)
Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm
Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
Relevant experience in medical or dental claims processing, financial counseling, and insurance denials process
Billing experience and insurance payment knowledge (i.e. eligibility, registration, company payment procedures, discrepancy tracking)
Patient account interactions, including development of payment plans.
Strong knowledge of third-party payers' guidelines and procedures required
Possess strong analytical skills and computer skills including Outlook, Excel, and Word.
Demonstrated Customer/Patient Account service skills
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a member of the team
Experience working in Orthodontic dental clinic;
Experience with electronic health record systems;
Demonstrated ability to balance multiple priorities and tasks through time-management and planning techniques; and
Knowledgeable of CDT 2021 dental codes or medical coding such as ICD-10 or CPT-4.
