In collaboration with peer level professionals (team physicians, strength and conditioning coaches, sport specific coaches, athletics administrators, sport dieticians and other department personnel, this position is responsible for the organization, administration, and clinical service of medical care to all student-athletes at UW. This includes records, personnel management, fiscal management, policies and procedures, facility management, supplies and equipment, and medico-legal aspects. Serve as the staff athletic trainer for a specified sport(s).
This position reports to the Deputy Athletic Director/COO for administrative responsibilities and to the Head Team Physician for all medically-related duties and assignments.

Compliance It is expected that this position will be familiar with and play a major role in ensuring compliance of the athletic training staff with all NCAA, UW, and HIPAA rules and guidelines. Understand all relevant policies and procedures with respect to the ordering of diagnostic tests, administration of drugs and other treatments, keeping of the health care record, medical hardships, and protection of the privacy of the student athlete.
Communication Identify potential sources of difficulty or conflict and will assure that the Deputy Athletic Director and the Head Team Physician are notified promptly on major issues, such as removal of an athlete from participation, disagreements among the health care team members, dissatisfaction of athletes, coaches or parents, and performance issues.
Specific Responsibilities Assign, supervise and evaluate 10-12 assistant athletic trainers, 2 (or more) didactic internship athletic trainers, 20-40 student athletic trainers, 2 full time nutritionists, 1 full time Social Worker, and 1 program coordinator.
Ensure that appropriate steps are taken to obtain and process medical insurance claims for all student-athletes who have medical insurance. Ensure that all athletes have signed approved forms for the appropriate release of their medical information.
Plan and schedule athletic trainer and physician coverage of games and practices. Provide athletic training coverage for a specified sport as coverage plan dictates and attend games and practices. Attend other games and practices as necessary.
In conjunction with the Head Team Physician, implement, expand on and administer athletic training and medical care policies and procedures. In conjunction with the Head Team Physician, implement, expand on and administer treatment, rehabilitation, and reconditioning policies and procedures. Under the direction of the Head Team Physician, direct the operation of therapeutic devices and equipment used in electrotherapy, hydrotherapy, thermotherapy, and cryotherapy.
Plan, schedule and assist in the administration of athlete physical examinations. Direct the ICA and the NCAA Drug Testing Program.
Supervise the purchase and distribution of nutritional supplements to student-athletes. Coordinate the Training Table dietary program in conjunction with the Department of Housing and Food Service and the departmental nutritionist. Prepare and monitor an annual budget for supplies, equipment and medical costs. Establish Health and Wellness facility rules and regulations. Maintain medical and statistical records for all Health and Wellness operations.
Follow-up on instructions given by the team physicians regarding routine procedures in the treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. Organize and administer an apprenticeship and preceptorship student-athletic training education program.
In conjunction with the Head Team Physician, establish and maintain athlete medical records to include all athletic injuries and illnesses, treatment, psychological referrals, rehabilitation, progress notes, reports to coaches and follow-up.
Interpret and review all university and departmental policies as they relate to student-athlete health care. Review all NCAA, HIPAA and Pac-12 Conference rules and regulations.
Represent the University of Washington Department of Intercollegiate Athletics on applicable NCAA, Pac-12 Conference and University of Washington Committees and sub-committees.
Compliance with the rules and regulations of the University, the NCAA, the Pac-12 Conference, the State of Washington and any other governing body is of paramount importance to the University. The overall responsibility of this position is for the successful operation of the program in full compliance with all such rules and regulations. As a condition of employment, the Employee shall be required to participate in rules education programs offered by the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.
Requirements: Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 5 years of experience as a full-time certified athletic trainer and NATA Certification. Knowledge of and experience in training room administration, supervisory and administrative ability including experience in student trainer supervision. Ability to interact effectively with other athletic staff and the medical community, and proven ability to relate to student-athletes. Knowledge and support of NCAA rules and regulations. This position will require evenings and weekends.
