The Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures at UNC Greensboro invites applications from individuals with an established record of dynamic undergraduate teaching and administrative experience coordinating a Spanish language program and supervising language instructors in a first-year and second-year level Spanish language program for an Academic Professional (AP) position as Director of Language Instruction (DLI) for the Spanish Basic Language Program (BLP) on a non-tenure-track, full-time, 11-month renewable/multi-year contract, effective August 1, 2021. Position Duties & Responsibilities: The AP serving as DLI for the Spanish BLP will assume multiple duties and responsibilities throughout the regular academic year and during summer session. These duties and responsibilities include (but are not limited to): • Teaching a 2/2 course load (to include at least one in the Spanish BLP); • Overseeing the curriculum and in-person, hybrid, and online instruction of all lower-level Spanish courses; • Designing Spanish BLP course schedules for each semester and the summer; • Managing 20+ members of the Spanish Lecturer faculty (including Full-Time Lecturers and Part-Time Lecturers) and Graduate Student Teaching Assistants; • Training and evaluating BLP instructors; • Coordinating textbook selection and program materials, including syllabi; • Administering revisions of the Spanish BLP, when needed; • Serving as primary point of contact for approximately 1500 students; • Participating in program promotion, placement tests, and student recruitment/retention; • Engaging in professional development and current in research related to Spanish applied linguistics and/or second-language teaching methodologies; • Remaining up-to-date on best practices in language program administration.
The AP DLI may also: • Teach courses related to their area(s) of specialization at the advanced and graduate-levels (in the curriculum of the SPA program and/or other LLC programs); • Participate on department MA and MEd or MAT thesis/portfolio committees; • Participate in scholarly conferences and/or publish works of research and/or creative activity in their field(s) of specialization.
Applicants for this position must hold a PhD in Second Language Acquisition or Pedagogy, Spanish Applied Linguistics, or a related field by August 1, 2021. Native or near-native proficiency in Spanish and English is required.
Demonstrated excellence in teaching, research-driven curriculum development, and current online technologies. Excellent administrative skills, and a commitment to working collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds and across department programs are essential. Active connection with research and professional organizations and ACTFLOPI certification and expertise in ACTFL guidelines are desirable. Expertise in languages beyond Spanish and English is a plus.
