DESCRIPTION: The Office of Community Standards & Wellbeing and Residence Life and Housing are seeking qualified and interested graduate students to serve as a Graduate Assistant (GA). This position works collaboratively within the two offices to: (1) supervise undergraduate students in residence by overseeing a Resident Assistant (RA) staff team, (2) facilitate our community standards processes for students with possible law or university policy violations, (3) and support the work of the University CARE Team which identifies students in crisis and connects those students to appropriate support resources. The Graduate Assistant is responsible for the creation and maintenance of a sense of community within their assigned residential environment that is conducive to engagement, growth, learning and meaningful interpersonal relationships, through their experience between the two offices. The nature of this position exists to increase collaboration within Student Affairs and enhance professional development opportunities for those in the role.
The Graduate Assistant will receive hands-on training in supervision, motivational interviewing, assessment methods, and strategies for having individual and group meetings with students, helping prepare them for various future careers in many areas of Student Affairs, Higher Education, or Counseling. The position is co-supervised by the Associate Deans of Student Affairs, Community Standards and Wellbeing and Residence Life and Housing. This position provides on-campus housing and is paid for 800 hours (approximately 25 hours per week, not to exceed 29 hours, strategically scheduled in the year around the academic calendar and departmental trainings).
Responsibilities of the position include: (variable based on interest/qualifications and departmental need)
Supervising a Resident Assistant (RA) team; weekly individual and group meetings; conducting annual performance evaluations; assisting in the development of interpersonal relationships, social interactions, and community cohesiveness between staff, residents, and University officials and other constituents.
Managing community and program development for assigned residential area.
Participating in the creation, facilitation, and assessment of all staff trainings.
Identifying students with personal, behavioral and/or developmental concerns and referring them to appropriate resources for consultation and assistance; writing communication records; adjudicating student conduct cases; enforcing all campus policies, rules and regulations, and the hall's community standards.
Participate as a campus first-responder on the Administrator on Call (AOC) duty rotation for crisis intervention and emergency coverage.
Support work of University CARE Team to support students in distress and refer to appropriate resources including coordination of case management and record keeping.
Conduct individual meetings with students to facilitate University Community Standards Processes and maintain records of those meetings, and proactively/appropriately report issues or concerns.
Maintain appropriate levels of confidentiality and privacy.
Participating in special assignments, annual events and projects as assigned through Student Affairs.
Other duties as assigned.
Marketable skills Graduate Assistants will be provided:
Training and experience in Motivational Interviewing, a counseling technique designed to help students/clients make and maintain positive changes in behavior.
Training and experience in student behavioral intervention and education, on a variety of health-related topics including: alcohol and substance use harm reduction, stress and mental health, and more.
Possible opportunities to attend webinars or regional drive in conferences or other professional development/networking opportunities with colleges and Universities in our region.
Experience in leading teams of students and developing student leaders.
Master's degree from, or acceptance/enrollment in, a graduate program in Counseling, Higher Education, Health Education, or other related field (or equivalent work-related knowledge/skills).
Direct or transferrable experience working with traditional age college students.
Willingness and ability to assume responsibility for confidential record keeping.
Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
Computer literacy and ability to learn online-based software with experience using the Internet, e-mail, and competence using a variety of Windows-based computer programs is required.
Flexibility to adjust work schedule to meet the needs of students and staff is necessary and will require attendance at evening and weekend events, as well as occasional overnight retreats and training.
Must be able to competently interact with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.
