The Senior Staff Athletic Trainer – Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Specialist reports directly to the Director of Intercollegiate and NUHS Sports Medicine/Head Team Physician. This position works under the medical supervision of the Director of Intercollegiate and NUHS Sports Medicine/Head Team Physician. This position is a full-time twelve-month appointment from September 1 through August 31.
Please Note: Expectation for some before/after traditional work ours as well as some weekend work.
Athletic Training: Provides athletic training services and/or supervision for sports medicine patients (both intercollegiate athletics, club and recreational sport) under the direction of a Team Physician in both the athletic training clinic and physician clinic.
Clinical Communication, Clinical Coordination and Clinical Referral
Creation and maintenance of a complete medical record
Physician and other sub-specialists’ referral
Coordination of TBI baseline testing
Management of sport-related concussion and TBI cases
Management of sport-related concussion and TBI referrals
Management of sport-related concussion and TBI rehabilitation
With appropriate training, perform vestibular evaluation and vestibular rehabilitation
Comorbid patient case manager
With other health care providers, assist in ADD/ADHD case management
Management of physician clinic
Coordination of clinical diagnostic testing including but not limited to X-ray, MRI, MRI-arthrogram, CT scan, echocardiogram and laboratory tests.
Referral and ongoing communication with sport psychologist for student athlete care
Referral and ongoing communication with NU Counseling and Psychological Service for student athlete psychological and psychiatric care
Communication of pertinent injury/illness information, as it relates to participation status, with athletic training staff as well as coaching staff and sport performance staff when needed.
Communication with sports performance staff and knowledge of strength and conditioning programs including coordination of group and individualized injury prevention programming.
Under the direction of Team Physicians, perform medical testing including but not limited to neurocognitive and motor control evaluations
Clinical Management and Emergency Care
With Team Physicians, make participation status decisions and execute the unchallengeable authority to remove an student athlete from participation and/or return to participation
Practice and event athletic training acute injury and emergency medical management as assigned in intercollegiate and club sport; may include travel; may include service on weekends as well as before/after traditional hours
Management and execution of all university athletic facility emergency action plans including communication, EMS activation, AED/CPR delivery and post-event reporting to Head Team Physician, University Risk Management, and Athletic Administration
Evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries including up to date knowledge and utilization of the latest evidence-based techniques and modalities
Knowledge and on-going execution of policies including but not limited to lightning, heat stress, cold weather, pre-participation physicals, alcohol and other drug, nutritional supplements, learning disabilities, prescription medications, over the counter medications, concussion, MRSA, asthma, sickle cell, and disordered eating
Provide formal and informal student athlete health and wellness education to student athletes, coaches, support staff, administrators and parents
Clinical supervision of athletic training students in clinical rotations and/or athletic training aides as assigned.
Annual creation and execution of a continuing education plan
Administrative: Completion of administrative responsibilities that may include independent activity as well as assisting the Head Team Physician and Head Athletic Trainer with:
Annual program strategic planning
Annual program goal creation and execution
Annual analysis of program staffing model
Periodic analysis of injury rates and trends including strategic planning with physicians and sub-specialists for future programming adjustments.
Periodic coordination of Quality Assurance/Quality Measurement projects
Coordination of TBI education for intercollegiate, club and intramural students
Coordination of TBI prevention programming for intercollegiate, club and intramural students
Coordination of TBI education for coaches, administrators and others as assigned
Coordination of internal and organic research related to TBI
Coordination of TBI data collection
Liaison to neuropsychological testing specialist
Coordination of return to learn programming
Liaison to academic service staff
With Head Team Physician, TBI Liaison to University Academic Deans and Professors
Coordination of public outreach programming for TBI
Management of long-term TBI recovery and long-term patient tracking
Concussion Management Policy maintenance and audit coordinator
Coordination of new and existing technology related to the management of TBI
Management of emerging trends related to TBI
On behalf of NU Sports Medicine staff, manage research requests involving NU staff and students
On behalf of NU Sports Medicine staff, monitor current literature related to TBI
On behalf of NU Sports Medicine staff, monitor current litigation related to TBI
Coordinate long-term (post-graduation) patient/case tracking and outcomes
Knowledge and compliance with all NCAA, Big Ten Conference and NUDAR rules, regulations, bylaws and interpretations
Performs other duties as assigned.
Master’s degree or higher level of education required
BOC, Inc. Certification
State of Illinois Athletic Training License
Minimum 8 years post-BOC Certification experience
