Thomas Nelson Community College (Thomas Nelson) is located on the Virginia Peninsula in the heart of Hampton Roads, a region renowned for being the birthplace of America and home to communities rich in culture and industry. Founded in 1967, Thomas Nelson serves over 13,000 students each year in credit instruction and over 5,000 in non-credit instruction and workforce services. The College is served by over 110 fulltime faculty, 350 adjunct faculty, and 360 staff members. Faculty and staff are strategic and responsive, committed to understanding and meeting the needs of the region. The college has two campuses, one in Hampton and the Historic Triangle Campus located in Williamsburg. The college also has a satellite site at the Southeast Higher Education Center in Newport News. Thomas Nelson Community College changes lives, empowers students to succeed, and enhances the social and economic vitality of the region through high quality education and workforce training, excellent services, and innovative partnerships. *The Position:* The Business Office - General Accounting is responsible for maintaining the integrity of the general ledger, accuracy of the financial data and providing high quality financial services to students, faculty, staff, administrators, management and other customers in accordance with procedures and practices established by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), Comptroller of the Commonwealth of Virginia, National Association of University Business Officer (NACUBO), Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB), Virginia Community College System (VCCS) and the Local College Board. This position is responsible for accurate and timely processing, recording and reconciliation of transactions including but not limited to local and state funds, accounts payable, payroll and grant financial transactions for Thomas Nelson Community College. Prepares financial statements and other related schedules. Prepares financial reports involving the compilation and analysis of fiscal data and proper classification for reporting purposes. Works with grant program manager to track, audit, reconcile and report on grants; performs other duties as assigned.
*Education and Experience:* * Experience with automated accounting systems and performing detailed work with numerical and statistical data. * Experience working with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and governmental accounting policies and procedures. * Experience using electronic systems to record information in various systems. *Knowledge:* * Comprehensive knowledge of and the ability to interpret and implement federal, state, local and VCCS policies, procedures and regulations. * Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles * Knowledge and experience in preparing financial statements and reports. * Knowledge and experience in reconciling complex accounting records. * Knowledge of current accounting computerized software applications *Skills:* * Strong organizational skills along with the ability to handle multiple priorities *Abilities:* * Must have the ability to prioritize work in a multitasking environment, manage time, and be adaptable to changing needs and frequent interruptions. * Ability to operate a computer to include word processing and spreadsheet software.
