Ohio Wesleyan University seeks an Assistant Marching Band Director. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible, 11-month (July 1 - May 31) position. The position will require evening and weekend work, as well as travel.
The Assistant Director will collaborate with the Marching Band Director to provide instructional leadership and skill development during rehearsals and performances. The Assistant Director will grow ensemble enrollment through focused recruitment methods including scouting, social media outreach, event planning, and maintaining effective communication with prospective students and music teachers.
Preferred qualifications include successful leadership experience with marching percussion. Additional qualifications include instructional expertise with marching wind instruments, color guard, drill writing, or arranging. Prior experience producing successful performances in any marching band style is required (corps, traditional, show band, military, parade band, indoor drumline, etc.).
Additional duties include but are not limited to one on one instruction, ensemble instruction including conducting, advising the spring semester student club pep band, event management, organizing group travel, equipment inventory supervision, developing alumni contacts, promoting fund-raising initiatives, budget planning and oversight, and administrative responsibilities with large group events including summer music camps, music festivals, and marching competitions. May include additional responsibilities related to student advising and mentoring.

Established in 2018, the OWU Marching Bishops have a new marching band director in 2021 (Rich Edwards, Director of Bands). OWU’s Marching Band is a growing program in the early phase of establishing its style and traditions. We provide spirited entertainment at 5-7 home football games each fall, plus select on-campus activities and off-campus travel events. Our long-term goal is to become a distinctive college program that defies the popular notion that only large universities have famous marching bands.
Experience producing successful performances in any marching band style (corps, traditional, show band, military, parade band, indoor drumline, etc.)
Ability to teach, develop instructional activities, and direct student-musicians.
Carry out assignments in a prompt and timely fashion.
Ability to write effectively.
Ability to travel to professional meetings and conferences as necessary.
Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with students, faculty, staff, administration, alumni, parents and community members.
1 year prior teaching in a successful high school or college marching band
Successful instructional and performance expertise with marching percussion.
Experience teaching wind instruments, color guard, drill writing, or arranging.
Experience using social media for professional purposes to highlight a program, its events, and successes.
Skill in interpersonal communications sufficient to interact effectively with students, colleagues, faculty and staff.
Experience advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion, and supporting students from diverse backgrounds.
Ability to actively foster a respectful, positive work environment that welcomes all persons.
