Research - Laboratory/Non-Laboratory, Staff/Administrative
The Johns Hopkins Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Asthma subspecialty clinics and Precision Medicine Centers of Excellence (PMCOE) are looking for a Sr. Clinical Program Coordinator to join our multi-disciplinary team of physicians, scientists, clinical and administrative staff, dedicated to research and clinical improvement in lung disease and management.
The Sr. Clinical Program Coordinator will organize the daily activities of patients entered into the Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Asthma subspecialty clinics and Precision Medicine Centers of Excellence (PMCOE). The programs exists within the Bayview Asthma and Allergy Center, which consists of physicians, nursing, and research support staff. Incumbent serves as primary identifier of COPD and Asthma patients, referral coordinator and patient resource for high volume medical group. This position also serves as cross-coverage subspecialty office manager to ensure operations run smoothly. Responsible for coordinating and administering pre-clinic questionnaires (releasing and administering questions in clinic), consenting for research studies, blood draws, sample processing, quality improvement and patient management. Prepares information and assists COPD/Asthma providers with refinement of PMCOE program as well as policy and workflow implementation.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Supports patient management of a multi-faceted, high volume COPD and Asthma clinics 3 days a week.
Serves as a liaison and primary contact person for clinical practice, referring physicians, and research personnel.
Works intensely with PMCOE leaders and COPD/Asthma providers to ensure the patients in our program are aware of proper procedures and research study opportunities.
Will be involved in data collection, data entry and data management functions for clinical research studies.
Using explicit criteria, screens and identifies eligible patients and maintains a paper and electronic log; requests clarification from clinical and program staff if uncertain regarding eligibility; promptly notifies clinical and project staff of eligible patients
Will ensure that proper written informed consent from each study participant is obtained prior to entering study; ensure that the original signed and dated consent from each study participant is filed in participants' research record. Use the JHU Clinical Research Management System (CRMS) to document participant consent. Will ensure compliance with HIPAA and IRB regulations and guidelines.
Will order, release and administer simple standardized surveys, clinical assessments and other data collection techniques to patients and their proxy's in-person and via phone; record data on case report forms.
Will perform vital clinical and research-related procedures such as pulmonary function testing (spirometry), eCo measurement, anthropometrics, and collection of vital signs, bio-specimen collection and phlebotomy.
Triage patient calls and addresses patient related questions to determine if physician/nurse response is required.
Educates patients regarding appointments, preparation for laboratory collection, examinations and procedures.
Assist with general maintenance of the clinic space, manage inventory of supplies and equipment for multiple research studies.
Assists with maintaining databases for the COPD and Asthma PMCOEs, conducts data entry and quality control and assists PMCOE leaders to generate reports and patient database.
Track and assess quality and completeness of clinical data entry and abstraction; immediately raise potential concerns with PMCOE leaders.
Maintains calendar, schedules appointments and meeting rooms for the PMCOE team.
Regularly update clinical and research staff, verbally and in writing, of progress with PMCOE functions and activities. Communicate effectively and cooperate with both clinical and research staff who are directly and indirectly involved in the PMCOE program in order to achieve COPD/Asthma PMCOE goals.
Improves clinic efficiency by contributing to quality improvement exercises and making recommendations to improve program.
HS diploma or GED required.
3 years of clinical/ medical assistant experience required.
Standard HIPAA/CITI courses completed and appropriate exams passed with necessary certification within 2 weeks of start date.
Ability to prioritize and work on multiple tasks with concurrent deadlines and utilize good time management
Certification as a Medical Assistant (AAMA, RMA, NCCA) or LPN strongly preferred.
Certified phlebotomist preferred. Will need to be certified within 90 days of hire.
Experience with REDCap, EPIC, MyChart and OpenSpecimen and other databases is a plus.
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Excellent verbal communication skills and good written communication skills.
Ability to interact in a professional manner with a diverse multi-disciplinary team.
Knowledge of COPD disease and asthma prevention and management desirable.
In the clinic setting, there is potential for exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials. However, there is little likelihood of harm if established health precautions are followed. This individual will interface regularly with a multidisciplinary team. The position is based at Johns Hopkins Bayview Asthma and Allergy Center but patient enrollment may require travel to other Johns Hopkins Health System entities.
