Brookhaven National Laboratory was recently chosen as the building site for the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a one-of-a-kind nuclear physics research facility. The EIC will be a discovery machine for unlocking the secrets of the "glue" that binds the building blocks of visible matter in the universe. The machine design is based on the existing and highly optimized RHIC Ion-Ion collider. It will consist of two intersecting accelerators, one producing an intense beam of electrons, the other a beam of protons or heavier atomic nuclei which are steered into head-on collisions. Beyond sparking scientific discoveries in a new frontier of fundamental physics, the Electron-Ion Collider will trigger technological breakthroughs that have broad-ranging impact on human health and national challenges.
The high current electron source R&D is focusing on developing a 550 kV HVDC gun to generate 120 mA average current electron beam for EIC cooler. The postdoc will work with scientists and engineers to develop high brightness gun and establish a high current gun test facility.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Collaborate with scientists and engineers to design a 550kV HVDC electric gun
Use simulation tools to optimize gun geometry, vacuum and HV arrangement
Participate in gun fabrication, assembly, conditioning, and beam commissioning.
Perform systematic measurements to validate and establish beam quality and high beam current
Maintain and operate a set of complex vacuum deposition tools
Prepare reports, papers and present the results
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
PhD in Physics, engineering, or other subject relevant to accelerator science
Knowledge of mechanical and vacuum systems
Knowledge of HVDC gun design using 2D and 3D beam simulation code
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for interaction with a diverse group of scientists, engineers, and technical staff
Preferrred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Experience with gun and beam operation
Experience with system test instruments such as vacuum gauges, RGA, Current measurement, HV design and test
Familiar with hardware control and language: Labview or Matlab
Experience with programming language: Python, C++, Mathematica, or Fortran
Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:
Must be comfortable working in industrial, construction and radiation environments
Will require occasional climbing ladders (low heights to 5'), moderate lifting (15-30 lbs.), working in the vicinity of operating machinery, exposure to noise, and the willingness to wear proper PPE
Requires both domestic and international travel
BNL policy requires that research associate appointments be made to individuals who have received their doctorate within the past five years
Initial 2-year term appointment subject to renewal contingent on performance and funding
