The General Manager (GM) is responsible for the management and daily operations of University Place Hotel (UPL), which is owned and operated by Portland State University (PSU). It is a budget-friendly hotel, with great access to transportation, located right next to campus. The GM is responsible for coordinating all facilities operations, and working with staff to ensure the smooth operations of conferencing, guest rooms, front office, accounting, maintenance, and guest services. When requested and if other hotel employees have been unable to resolve issues, the GM addresses concerns and complaints of the guests. The GM will also be asked to step into various roles on the hotel campus when needed.
The GM also needs to establish and maintain close working relationship with many PSU departments, including Campus Public Safety (CPSO), Finance and Administration (FADM), Human Resources, Retail Services, Campus Housing, Parking, Facilities, Catering, and Audio-Visual Services.
The ideal candidate for this position has hands-on hotel experience at many levels, possibly even from the ground up. The GM is not just the face of the hotel, but is an active member of the day-to-day hotel staff.
Minimum of 5-8 years progressive experience in Hotel Management with an emphasis in operations/sales.
Understands, develops, and utilizes communications and public relations skills to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of the organization.
Proven performance record for developing and supervising a goal-oriented customer service team.
Excellent interpersonal skills including written and verbal communications skills.
Ability to work a varied schedule that may include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Problem resolution skills, identifying and discerning customer/employee unique needs through utilizing appropriate resources and questions.
Ability to network and build community partnerships within the PSU community.
10 or more years of Hotel Operations experience.
Experience in working with represented employees working under a union contract.
