The Assistant Technical Director (ATD) is responsible for the planning and operations of the Department of Performing and Media Arts scene shop, including all technical facilities and equipment, in support of a wide range of department performances and events. The ATD, in coordination with the Technical Director, assures that scenic sets are built according to schedule and in a manner that supports learning objectives and assures a valuable learning experience for production laboratory students. The ATD supervises the day-to-day operation of the scene shop, executes the engineered and technical plans for stage scenery, orders supplies and materials, maintains shop equipment, promotes safe, clean and efficient working conditions. Teaches, trains and supervises students on proper equipment protocols, lab safety procedures, and the necessary skills and procedures for the construction and finishing of scenery and properties in the production laboratory PMA 1610, playing a role in designing the class curriculum as well as creating and scheduling class projects in conjunction with shop faculty and staff. The ATD provides teaching, advising and mentoring support.
This position develops shop cost estimates for smaller scale and outside performances/events and helps assure productions are accountable to financial and staff budget allocations.
Work schedule generally follows a standard work week but varies depending on operational needs and productions. Attendance at rehearsals and shows may require night and weekend work.
This is a regular, full-time recurring nine month appointment (mid-August - mid-May) paid over 12 months.

Required Qualifications: Master's degree and 3 to 5 years relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience, in field of theatre technology. Extensive knowledge and experience in scenic design and construction and use of general shop equipment. Effective organizational and planning skills. Creative thinking, problem solving, improvisational and time management skills are essential. Ability to read and interpret technical drawings. Must be competent with basic software such as Word, Excel, etc.
Preferred Qualifications: Prior experience with teaching or training in theater or an academic environment. Experience in managing or supervising student and staff work crews. Skilled verbal and written communicator, able to work effectively with multiple production areas and staff.
