TECHNICAL ASSOCIATE I , Mechanical Engineering , to develop novel portable systems for on-site virus-loaded aerosol detection under minimal supervision in a multidisciplinary group of undergraduates, graduate students, and researchers in the Del Vecchio Lab. Will plan and execute experimental protocols to fabricate portable device components; characterize the performance of the prototype on virus-loaded aerosol detection, collect samples, record the concentration, and perform chemical assays; record test results and analyze results; and use a variety of techniques, functions, and equipment to support the lab, such as CAD design and prototyping using CNC mill, CNC lathe, flow cytometry, programming Arduino boards, and standard lab equipment such as vortex mixers and gel electrophoresis.
Job Requirements REQUIRED : bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific field (i.e., mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, biological engineering, electrical engineering, chemistry, biology, biochemistry); at least two years of experience with prototyping/device building and working in a laboratory environment (which may include experience gained at the undergraduate level) or participating on a design team (i.e., Formula SAE); basic laboratory skills (similar to those taught in an introductory chemistry or biological course); experience with Arduino or with C++ or Python; experience with CAD design and prototyping using CNC mill, CNC lathe, 3D printing, laser cutter, and water jet; demonstrated commitment to producing accurate and high-quality data; comfort summarizing, reporting on, and presenting results to researchers; strong organizational, time-management and documentation skills; ability to work independently and as part of a team; and awareness of basic safety issues and ability to follow safety procedures and maintain a safe work environment.
