The Department of Pediatric Immunology seeks aNurse Practitioner to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary health team and is responsible for providing comprehensive and age appropriate care for children with rheumatologic diseases. Will work with the attending and other members of the health care team in the care of patients from infancy through adolescence. This will include outpatient evaluations of new and follow-up patients, assistance with inpatient consultations, and telephone follow-up with patients to review laboratory results and acute or ongoing medical issues.
The Nurse Practitioner will also work on selected research protocols as directed by the division chief and supervising attending.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
Provides comprehensive, age appropriate and episodic care to patients as a member of a multidisciplinary health care team. Perform history and physical exams. Discriminate between normal and abnormal findings in the history and physical. Identify differential diagnosis. Assess severity of patient’s illness and establish a plan for patient evaluation.
Establishes a plan of care specific to the patient and age of the patient served. Order appropriate lab and radiographic studies and other tests. Appropriately interprets lab, radiographic and other tests. Perform tests and procedures as indicated. Establishes plan of care related to patient’s identified problems including medications, diet, therapeutic procedures, etc. Consults with other health team members regarding proposed treatment guidelines as necessary. Involves patient/ family in the development of the plan of care.
Implements plan of care in a safe and effective manner. Prescribes and regulates medications and performs other related procedures. Establishes priorities in patient’s care and management. Records patient visit/interaction in concise, clear, logical and timely manner.
Evaluates effectiveness of plan and need for referrals and/or follow-up. Evaluates effectiveness of previously implemented medical treatment. Arranges for referrals when indicated.
Work with insurance companies to attain authorization for treatment when needed.
Assumes responsibility and accountability for organizing time and workload to meet patient, staff, and departmental needs. Prioritizes patient interactions appropriately. Identifies problems that impede overall functioning and initiates appropriate interventions.
Organizes workload to meet patient and organizational needs. Utilizes time management to see patients in an efficient manner. Maintains consistent level of productivity as influenced by impinging factors of access, practice load, and complexity of problems seen. Analyzes new or changing situations and plans to meet new needs.
Works collaboratively with health care team members to facilitate smooth operations of the unit. Adheres to departmental, organizational, state and Federal policy, rules and regulations.
Further responsibilities will include participation in departmental meetings/conferences as scheduled and contribution towards the departmental goals and objectives.
Additional responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, billing for services, written documentation and dictation, coordinating specialty care and speaking with consultants for patients, addressing patient issues over the phone, filling prescriptions and patient paperwork.
Compliance with Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements and maintenance of certification.
Specific research duties will include, but not limited to, maintaining detailed working knowledge of assigned protocols, maintaining electronic or hard copy regulatory binder for assigned protocols, verifying patient eligibility for studies, assisting with the consent process for patients and collection of data to be entered in to database.
Master's degree in nursing; Registered Nurse license and Certified as a Nurse Practitioner. Must be licensed as NP in State of Maryland or other state where practicing. Additional experience may substitute for master's degree, as permitted by the JHU equivalency formula. Current CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date.
JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.
Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.

Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
