Job no: 502402 Position type: Full-Time 12-Month, Time-Limited Department: 182000 - Department of Comparative Bio Scien Location: Main Campus - Starkville, MS Categories: Professional Position Open Date: Apr 26 2021
The College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking two full-time technicians to perform COVID-19 assays in cooperation with the Longest Student Health Center.
The MSU-CVM COVID-19 Testing Lab has been approved since August 20, 2020 in accord with the guidelines of the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA). Sampling (nasopharyngeal swabs) is done by the Student Health Center. Potentially infectious swabs are handled only in the biological safety cabinet, and one of the first solutions added kills the virus, so the remainder of the assay can be done safely on the benchtop. The successful applicant must be willing to work at least one evening per week and occasionally on Saturday. Training in the specific assay performed by the lab will be provided, but some experience with real time PCR would be useful. The successful applicant must also be comfortable carefully following standard operating procedures and with other duties associated with the position such as recording information needed for quality assurance, passing proficiency tests in which known positive and negative samples must be identified correctly, preparing solutions needed for the assay, and routine troubleshooting to determine the cause of any invalid assays that occur. Training for handling BSL-2 agents will be provided, and previous experience working with such agents is preferred. Other duties include maintaining up-to-date emergency use authorization testing methods, ensuring that all clinical testing data meets required quality metrics prior to reporting, communicating with the Student Health Center for reporting test results, and archiving and data management of testing results. The successful applicant will help implement the laboratory's quality control policies, monitoring and documenting all quality control activities as well as instrument and procedural calibrations.
The requirements for testing personnel include a B.S. or higher degree in Chemistry, Biology, or a related discipline. A copy of the appropriate transcript, with SSN redacted, is required, and transcripts that have been translated to English must also include verification by a credentialing agency that the degree is comparable to a similar degree in the U.S.
For these positions, applicants with a Ph.D. will be given preference.
Applicants must apply online. Please include cover letter and resume.
Position is contingent upon funding availability.
