A unit in the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, the Intergroup Dialogue Project (IDP) at Cornell University develops and leads multi-phase and multi-party educational opportunities that are rooted in core intergroup dialogue processes and tailored to the needs of different constituencies on campus. By creating optimal conditions for intergroup interactions and meaningful peer-to-peer academic learning, our team members play a key role in the expansion of undergraduate diversity education at Cornell.
Intergroup dialogue found its way to Cornell in the fall of 2012, where it was first offered in the form of a semester-long academic course for undergraduate students, which now accommodates ~400 undergraduate students per year. The success of this course has inspired campus stakeholders to expand beyond the academic semester-long model, as well as to provide innovative offerings for graduate and professional students, postdocs, faculty, staff, and alumni. Recent initiatives include the implementation of a mandatory IDP session during orientation for all incoming undergraduate students, year-long course for academic advisors, semester-long course for faculty, and an inclusive leadership course for undergraduate students. Reporting to the Executive Director for Undergraduate Diversity Education, and working with a vibrant team of IDP staff and facilitators, the Intergroup Dialogue Engagement Specialist will be responsible for developing new opportunities for students, faculty, and student-facing staff to engage in meaningful educational processes, as well as providing consultation and support for Cornell staff and faculty who are working to create inclusive communities for undergraduate students on campus. Additionally, this position will enhance IDP's existing curricular and co-curricular offerings based on program evaluation and assessment. Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, developing curriculum and materials for various offerings; coaching and providing training to peer facilitators leading IDP's academic courses; implementing assessment studies using qualitative and/or quantitative data; communicating University and Unit mission to further collaborations with programs, units, and institutions on campus; and enhancing and facilitating workshop and training sessions for student-facing staff, faculty, and graduate students. The Intergroup Dialogue Engagement Specialist will be part of the unit's leadership team and will play an integral role in manifesting and implementing a vision of an inclusive campus environment that supports a diverse community of students, faculty, and staff.
Master's degree in a related field with 3-5 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
Demonstrated knowledge of research and literature in the areas of social justice education and intergroup dialogue
Experience with intergroup dialogue/relations programs and strong facilitation skills
Demonstrated curriculum development skills
Experience with diverse populations and comfort in handling situations involving intercultural conflict and intercultural skill development
Ability to handle multiple competing priorities and to adapt to changing priorities
Proven ability to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines
Proven independent judgment, problem-solving and decision-making skills
Skilled collaborator with abilities in cultivating and maintaining effective working relationships with colleagues and stakeholders
Excellent planning, organization, interpersonal, and communication (written/verbal) skills
Must have working knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and e-mail programs
This is a full-time position, located on the Ithaca, NY campus. At this time, Cornell is anticipating a fully in-person semester in fall 2021.
