The translational heart failure research laboratory of Yasuhiro Shudo, MD/Ph.D., in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Stanford University, is looking to hire a motivated life science research professional 1 (LSRP1) to perform basic functions and activities involved in defined research projects, and independently conduct and analyze experiments. The Shudo laboratory investigates the development of novel tissue engineering strategies to treat heart failure and improve cardiac revascularization that can be successfully translated to the clinical arena.
As a part of a unique interdisciplinary and collaborative research lab, an LSRP1 in Dr. Shudo's laboratory will work on multiple projects and gain extensive experience with various wet-lab techniques and small and large animal experiments. The LSRP is expected to lead and design experiments to tackle critical questions and challenges in the cardiovascular field. The LSRP1 will work independently under general guidance from Dr. Shudo and other senior scientists and have the ability to recognize irregularities in experimental results and modify experiments as needed. The LSRP1 will be in direct contact with the principal investigator for experimental design and troubleshooting, but experiments will be scheduled and performed by the LSRP1 independently. The primary responsibilities include: culturing and maintaining primary and stem cell lines, performing basic science techniques related to histology and molecular assays such as RT-qPCR, western blot, and flow cytometry; imaging studies such as echocardiogram, confocal microscopy, and atomic force microscopy; and assisting in small and large animal cardiac surgery and anesthesia.
The position is ideal for the initiative, enthusiastic, and creative individuals who desire a leadership role in a biomedical research lab and gain translational research experience. Candidates with extensive experience on the following techniques are preferred: molecular and cell biology techniques, primary cell culture, microscopy, immunostaining, animal experiments, statistical analyses, and tissue engineering.
However, we welcome candidates with a growth mindset, interest in various cardiovascular research questions related to molecular underpinnings of heart disease, and a willingness to take on challenging learning opportunities. A high level of initiative and motivation, ability to work independently and as a part of a team, and excellent communication, organization, and time management skills are required.
While we are looking for a minimum 2-year commitment. We are also looking to fill this position as soon as possible.
Plan approach to experiments in support of research projects in lab and/or field based on knowledge of scientific theory.
Independently conduct experiments; maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.
Apply the theories and methods of a life science discipline to interpret and perform analyses of experiment results; offer suggestions regarding modifications to procedures and protocols in collaboration with senior researcher.
Review literature on an ongoing basis to remain current with new procedures and apply learnings to related research.
Contribute to publication of findings as needed. Participate in the preparation of written documents, including procedures, presentations, and proposals.
Help with general lab maintenance as needed; maintain lab stock, manage chemical inventory and safety records, and provide general lab support as needed.
Assist with orientation and training of new staff or students on lab procedures or techniques.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):
Bachelor's degree in related scientific field.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
General understanding of scientific principles. Demonstrated performance to use knowledge and skills when needed.

Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand, lift, carry, push and pull objects weighing over 40 pounds.
Occasionally sit, kneel, crawl, reach and work above shoulders, sort and file paperwork or parts.
Rarely climb, scrub, sweep, mop, chop and mix or operate hand and foot controls.
Must have correctible vision to perform duties of the job.
Ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours.
Ability to lift heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
Ability to work in a dusty, dirty, and odorous environment.
Position may require repetitive motion.
