The Writing Center is located within the Sheridan Center for Teaching and Learning, which offers both instructional and student support. The Assistant Director of the Writing Center collaborates with key campus partners including Brownâ™s Nonfiction Writing Program, the College, the Graduate School, the School for Professional Studies, and the Division of Pre-College and Summer Undergraduate Programs (PCSUG) to develop writing across the curriculum, support academic integrity, and offer effective and equitable practices for writing support.
The Assistant Director will manage and administer key programs in the Writing and English Language Support Hub, chiefly the Writing Fellows program, which provides in-house writing support for the Brown community. The Assistant Director recruits and supports faculty partners across a variety of disciplines and hires, supervises, and offers professional development for the approximately 65 Fellows in the program. This position will teach a section of the foundational course for the program (ENGL1190M) and will carry a non-tenure-track faculty appointment to allow the Assistant Director to teach this course.
This position also collaborates with other Sheridan staff to lead writing-focused one-week pre-orientation programs, which typically take place in August and involve summer planning and student outreach. The Assistant Director hires, supervises, and trains student staff and collaborates closely with faculty facilitators.
Other key responsibilities include educational development, particularly around supporting a culture of writing at Brown, and graduate student writing support.
Earned Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree depending on discipline, in discipline represented by a Brown department (needed for the teaching responsibilities of this position, which require a faculty appointment), by the start date of position.
1-3 years of professional experience in a college Writing Center, or with Writing Across the Curriculum program administration, or in a faculty/student development role with a strong writing focus.
Postsecondary teaching experience as instructor of record, with evidence of teaching effectiveness.
Teaching or Writing Center experience in working effectively with a diverse student and faculty population and demonstrated ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.
Knowledge of composition theory and best practices in writing pedagogy committed to inclusion, equity, and social justice.
Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
Facility with work in a collaborative environment, as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Strong commitment to collaboration and collegial interactions.
Highly effective listening, verbal, and written communication skills.
Project management skills, such as detail orientation and attentiveness to timelines.

Experience with a Writing Fellows or undergraduate peer tutor program preferred.
Experience with graduate consultants/associates programs preferred.
Experience working in or collaborating with a faculty development center and/or academic support preferred.
Experience with digital modalities for writing preferred.
Position requires occasional weekend or evening hours as needed.
