Research - Laboratory/Non-Laboratory, Staff/Administrative
The Department of Ophthalmology works on research related to the leading cause of blindness in the US, macular degeneration. The lab primarily focuses on experiments using primary cultures and iPS cultures of the layer of the retina most affected in this disease, the retinal pigment epithelium. We seek an enthusiastic individual (enthusiasm and long-term job commitment more important than experience per se) willing to learn a range of experimental techniques in the lab, and willing eventually to contribute ideas of their own.
Dissection of eyes and primary culture, requiring fine hand-eye microsurgical abilities
Induced pluripotent cell differentiation and culture
Cloning, purification, and transfection of DNA and siRNA into primary and iPS cells
Standard molecular biology and cell biology techniques, including confocal microscopy, qPCR, and Western blotting
Routine lab maintenance
Ability to learn new protocols depending on interest of the individual (aspects of the lab deal with metabolomics, lipidomics, RNASeq, and other large-scale data projects)
PI is willing to adjust research to fit particular interests of the individual, and mentee career development, however the mentee defines it, is a critical part of the PI's job for this position.
Associates degree and 1-3 years’ experience requirement
Willing to work with a young investigator, willing to teach others, strives towards independence, curious, interested in building a positive lab environment
An intended commitment to work in our lab for at least 2 years and ideally 5+
Experience in any of the responsibility areas detailed above
Computer coding experience
Able to read literature in order to aid in trouble-shooting experiments
