Facilities Engineering's is responsible for university stewardship, which includes, but is not limited to the stewardship of engineered systems on campus, maintenance of Design and Construction Standards, Construction Document archiving, and project design reviews for QA and standards compliance.
Facilities Engineering also provides project management services that cover engineered systems infrastructure, system intensive building renovations, small building renovations up to $1M (typically a result of an initial assessment), local approvals efforts (SEQRA, NEPA, Site Plan/Special Permit approval support,) energy conservation projects and projects relative to research collaboration.
Facilities Engineering manages maintenance programs for campus-wide systems such as bridges, generators, elevators, roofs, structures, pavement and more.
Lastly, Facilities Engineering provides design services related to architectural-scoping services, design of small renovations and ADA improvements; mechanical design including HVAC, plumbing and fire protection; electrical design including lighting, power and fire alarm systems, emergency power, and electrical services; civil design including roads and parking areas, structural, and utility infrastructure; environmental including hazardous site clean-up, LEED support, potable, storm and waste water, air modeling and permitting; SEQRA and NEPA approvals; and design related to supply, distribution and building energy engineering, sustainability, and renewable energy sources.

Facilities Engineering is currently seeking a Mechanical Engineer. This is an unique opportunity to be the "owner" of your work while having a focus on the best interest of Cornell.
As a Mechanical Engineer for Facilities Engineering you will:
Provide designs for a range of engineered mechanical systems, including design experience with HVAC and piping distribution, lab renovations, fire protection layout, system assessments, estimating, energy modeling, and life cycle cost analysis.
Represent the University's interest in such matters with senior administrators, local community officials, faculty and others.
Provide technical engineering services including feasibility analysis; write technical reports and present results to clients.
Supervise design, or prepare specifications, drawings, cost estimates, and construction documents that relate to mechanical engineered systems for maintenance, repair, and alteration projects.
Promotes and establishes processes to provide excellence and accountability to the various tasks of maintaining the campus.
Maintain intimate knowledge of BCNYS, NYSPC, NYSMC, NYSFC, NYSECCC and other related codes to provide interpretations and recommendations related to University projects.
Knowledge and experience using software bundles similar to Carrier HAP and Elite Software to perform HVAC load calculations, building energy analysis, HVAC duct and pipe sizing, plumbing design, and analyzing fire sprinkler systems.
Coordinate with other discipline engineers on final design
Review mechanical system deficiencies and conduct risk assessments to determine the likelihood and impact of a failure.
Develop and update University design & construction standards relating to mechanical engineering.
Work with internal and external design teams to establish and maintain principles for system design for Cornell's renovation and building projects.
Maintain skillset at a high level of technical expertise within Facilities Engineering.
Provide technical and financial analysis, including design reviews, for projects managed throughout the University.
What you need:
Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program (BSME preferred) plus five years minimum applicable design experience. Or, equivalent education/experience of twelve credit years as recognized by New York State Education Law Article 145, Section 7206 as demonstrated by application to the NYS Education Department, Office of the Professions.
Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering exam.
Strong written and verbal communication and team building skills.
Working knowledge of the appropriate codes and standards in discipline and demonstrated skill in design of facility mechanical systems.
Expertise in HVAC, building automation controls, process piping, fire protection and plumbing.
Excellent oral and written communication skills as well as ability to develop and maintain effective customer relationships within a team approach.
Ability to work on multiple projects and designs with varying scope and multiple stages of completion.
Proficiency with a variety of business and technical computer software (such as Word, Excel, Project, CADD, Revit).
Must have and maintain a valid driver's license.
A preferred applicant will also have:
An advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering, five to ten years' experience and/or
New York State Professional Engineer's license.
Experience with heating and cooling load calculation software and hydronic node analysis software.
Leadership experience on design and capital construction projects (up to ~$5M) and ability to drive projects to successful conclusion.
Design experience with HVAC and piping distribution, lab renovations, fire protection layout, system assessments, estimating, energy modeling, and life cycle cost analysis.
